Indecision over engagement rings!

Hi all!
I was wondering if I could ask for your help/suggestions. I recently got engaged and am currently looking for my engagement ring. On the first day we went out, we saw a modern high street diamond solitaire ring in Goldsmiths which was pretty and suited my fingers due to the fine band ( I have the smallest fingers for a grown adult, I swear!). The diamond is 0.33 of a carat.
We then went to an independent jewellers and spotted a ring that looked way out of our price range. However, it turns out that it was the same price as the Goldsmiths ring. It is a far larger diamond (0.60!) and is one of a kind, which I kinda like. It too had a narrow band but, because it's more traditional, the claw looks a bit old fashioned. Also because of it's size, it won't sit comfortably next to a simple band and would instead have to be shaped - which I'm not exactly thrilled by. The Goldsmiths one would sit fine alongside a band however.
The thing is, I am completely stuck. I don't know which to go for. Due to my indecision, my other half bought the Goldsmiths one to see how I felt once I got it home and although my initial reaction was 'it's not the other one', it has started to grow on me. I really thought it would make my decision easier but if anything, I'm left even more confused!
I wanted to ask if anyone else has been in a predicament over their ring or if they've just 'known' it's the one for them? I know I'm over-thinking things and it's now reached the point where my hopeless indecision is spoiling what should be a fun and exciting time. After all, it's not everyday you get to pick a beautiful diamond ring, is it?!
Thanks in advance. x

I'm sure it will grow on you
At least you liked it a bit to start if you understand me?
I'm worried about my wedding ring in that sence. I'm going to avoid looking at any more as I know what I'm like for changing my mind.
You have the one you have now0 -

I knew I wanted mine as soon as I saw it. And as I'm the Queen of indecision usually, the very fact I felt like this was an omen.
It wasn't a particularly grand ring, nor very expensive but it just felt right iyswim.
Are you wearing the ring just now? I'd keep it in the box and look at it now and again. If you like it every time you open the box then keep it. If you just look at it and think 'it's ok', then change it.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Just out of curiousity, what made your OH buy the Goldsmith's one?
Perhaps that it the ring he would have chosen for you if he'd decided by himself.
From your explanation, to me, it sounds like you prefer the Goldsmith's one as you said it was pretty and suited you (without any "buts")
Whereas the other one, you said is one of a kind, which you kinda (not really, really) like and that it won't sit comfortably next to a simple band which you're not really happy about.
I must admit that I am also Queen of Indecisiveness, but weighing up what you've said about both rings and as an outsider (who hasn't seen either of them so it's not from a personal preference), I'd say you're possibly edging towards the Goldsmith's ring.
Good luck and let us know which one you choose (also, you'll possibly get the same feeling about the dresses too... At times I get the wobbles and then I look at it and know it's the one.)
Hope this helps❤Planned our wedding, still planning lessons❤

When we went to choose my engagement ring I wanted three diamonds (larger one in the centre with two small ones either side) and I also had my nans engagement ring which was a possible alteration job.
After being advised by the jeweller (family friend) not to break my nans ring up he got loads of cases of rings out. Other half went white when I looked at the clusters - think he thought more diamonds more money.
I looked at the rings I had in mind but didnt see one I liked but I spotted a very plain circular flat solitaire (rub over setting) which reminded me of the birthstone ring my nan wore so thats what I went for. Its pretty, practical and I can wear it all the time. My friend had a cluster ring and does not wear it at all as it catches on everything.
Its all down to personal choice - when you see it you know its the one.

Congrats on your engagement!
To be honest, this is going to be down to your personal choice.
My OH bought my engagement ring, all he knew was I wanted a one off and for it to be marquise cut but definitely not a fortune price wise.
He chose a gorgeous marquise ring, from an old fashioned jewellers which I do genuinely love. However, this has been tricky to find a wedding band for and will have to be shaped - but this makes it all the more unique in my opinion.
Personally, I like the more unique/antique style jewellery which has a story behind it. That said, it doesn't mean your Goldsmith's ring isn't the one for you.

Thanks everyone. It's really interesting that you all see me leaning towards the Goldsmiths ring. Originally I would say it was the antique one that grabbed me, but then, true to form, I started thinking about things too much... it won't fit neatly with a wedding band, it seemed to have a touch of yellow colour in the diamond, it's not as modern as others... you can see where I'm going with this!
My other half said that if he'd picked a ring out on his own for me ( I think he really wishes he had now, poor man!), he would have gone with the Goldsmiths one. I too admit that I was surprised by how much I liked the antique one but I wonder how much of my attraction is based on the diamond... it's double the size of the other one!My OH bought the Goldsmiths one on the basis that a) I'd have something to wear over Christmas and b) we could return it (the other shop only do credit) if I really didn't like it.
I've basically got until tomorrow until the antique jewellers put that one back on the shelf. I do love it but there would be compromises which I wouldn't have to make with the Goldsmiths one. Argh. I'm freaking out! The engagement ring is just the start! Next I have to decide on the venue, the dress, the wedding bands. Thank goodness we said we'd get married in 2013 - the more time the better in my case!
Am going back to the jewellers tomorrow so will keep you posted! Thanks so much. x0 -
I tried on DOZENS of engagement rings!!!! Thought I would never find the one. I sort of liked a few of them but they weren't 100% right. I tried on more rings. And more. I started to worry a bit tbh! Then - I saw it. The One. I immediately lit up and when I tried it on I didn't want to take it off. I love it to bits and always will.
Strangely enough, I chose my wedding ring quite quickly. I only tried on about 15 :rotfl: I so can't wait to wear it.
If you're not 100% about either of them, return the Goldsmith one and keep looking! There's no rush!

Do you know much about the specifications of the diamonds in each ring? Personally, I'd rather have (if I were a girl, naturally
) a smaller diamond that was a better colour, clarity and cut - carat is bottom of my list. I notice diamonds that sparkle, not the size

That's a good point. Colour and cut were most important to me. I wanted a D/E colour, mine is a D (the best
) and the cut grade is fantabilicious or whatever you call it :rotfl: VSI clarity as far as I can recall. Carat - about 0.6. It's FAB.

I got mine yesterday - a twist trilogy. I too tried on lots and initially I discounted the one I got saying I didn't like the bar setting. But the cost was a big thing to me, not that I had a budget but I just didn't feel
Comfortable having a too expensive ring. Mine is shaped but I'm not thinking of having a shaped wedding band, I'm quite happy that they won't fit together, I don't think they need to, and a gap will make it look like there's a lot of ring on my finger lol!0
