ChEap importation of leather

Hi all, I've been set an assignment for part of my business course to research cheap import of materials that could be made most profitable. I've chosen to research the importation of leather but want to check that so far my research is correct. I've been informed India is known for affordable leather, or cheaper. My other question would be is there different types of quality .
Now I know this is a very niche question I'm hoping that if theres one person out there that may have some knowledgement on this area it would be muchly appreciated
Thanks
Paul

  • Big mistake, I work for a fashion designer, and leather is not cheap anywhere ever. We have been to Malaysia, India and China, real cheap leather doesn't exist. If someone is offering you cheap leather it's PU(fake leather)
  • yep there is diff grades.... and depending on what grade, what colour the hide has been dyed, will determine the price..

basically you pay for what you get, and if you want to produce a good quality finished item... you must start of with good quality materials....

depending on what your end product is, you can buy 'clippings' which is the off-cuts of material/leather which is a cheaper option...

you can buy small off-cuts/strips/re-claimed etc of good quality leather for approx £250 a ton

Brazil is another producer of leather and yes there are many different types of leather from upholstery to aircraft/car seating to contact and of course handbags and shoes...... the list goes on.
