Broadwood, you along with Ariba, really should take a reality check. OP from me on a day like today (bridge is completly closed to all vehicles as I type) both sides of bridge have very large electronic signs which state "bridge closed for HGV,s, cars towing caravans/trailers, high sided vehicles" even cars with roof box on, are not allowed to cross during high winds.

Main reason for this is of course safety. Fotunately HGV on the 28th, did not crush a car as it fell over, nor did a car crash into rear of toppled HGV. The driver will of course have been charged for ignoring WARNING sign and, hopefully some other charge for putting others life at risk, as police, bridge staff have to attend these incidents in gale force winds to clean up after selfish/dangerous drivers.

Finally, traffic is re-routed via Kincardine Bridge, so bricks, good to shops do arrive, maybe a little bit later, but safely.

Ps, Broadwood, your signature says HGV1 driver, ME ME ME eh...........

I had this discussion recently about bringing back the tolls as the bridge where I live is closed far more often these days than it ever was when the tolls were in place. We wondered if it was solely to do with the income generation the tolls provided or if having multiple people in the toll booths somehow made things safer? Who knows but it is a pain having to make allowances so the regular bridge closures these days

Fortunately I don't have to use the Bridge too much and, for people like yourself, you do have my sympathies, it was not an easy statement to make, when I said bring back tolls! Obviously a huge saving for those who commute daily and, makes for a quiker crossing with no booths to stop at.

It is unfortunate there are people out there who only think about themselves, the ME ME ME attitude. Vehicle confiscation and, hefty fines may help?

I still feel, to build a new bridge is wrong, should have been a tunnel, however, our SNP numpties want an iconic structure, will will of course suffer same troubles as existing one.........eventually!

    Regards.

Part of the Furniture Photogenic Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
I live in Shetland-what is happening on the mainland is a typical winter for us. Ferries cancelled for days on end, no fresh supplies getting here. Poor people at Christmas, their power went out at 3pm Xmas day, and was out for 3 days! We have had structural damage to lots of properties, yet we didn't even get a mention on the news!
We seem to get overlooked up here :(

Having said that, I hope everyone stays safe :)

    Hi Welda.

Your OP of the 28th didn't give details which is why I asked you to explain the logic of your very limited post.

If, as you now say, warning signs of closure to certain vehicles were ignored, then that is a totally different scenario, and I agree that guilty drivers of said vehicles should be charged for endangering life by their selfish actions.

That said, I still don't follow the logic that this should be a reason to re-introduce tolls, or ban all HGV's or caravans or trailers from said bridge for ever. If that logic was followed for every crash/accident then most roads would be shut to most types of traffic.

Most accidents are a result of a driving error or error of judgement by one or more persons. Relatively few are totally unavoidable. I am at various times a pedestrian, cyclist, motor-cyclist, car driver and HGV artic driver. There are good bad and indifferent people in all of these classes of road user. On average, the better ones in all categories tend to live longer and have fewer "mishaps". But risk and life have to be balanced somewhere.

Of course this forum is open to all and sundry, my limited post was directed towards folks in central scotland, who are familiar with bridge rules and regs.

There are electronic signs on all main routes, even if not heading towards bridge, signs are there for all to see, hence my use of the word "selfish".

I didn't say any vehicles should be banned from using bridge, as mentioned, certain vehicles are not allowed to cross during inclement weather conditions.

When tolls were in place on both sides of bridge, this situation would not have happened. But I also never agreed with tolls, another form of tax. There again though, soon there will be two bridges to maintain, shudder to think about the costs!!

I've been on the bridge when an accident has occured, there is nothing you can do, you sit there watching rear view mirror, hoping vehicle driver heading towards your rear are switched on. Actually, while sitting there (heading north) rubber neckers caused a wee bump heading south!!

One other point, mid 90's, I did a bit of work on the rail bridge. have seen how the weather changes so quick, I also know, it is a long way down!!
