Family Tree Maker - con

I have just spent £30 on a Family Tree Maker 2012 Platinum package from PC world - including 6 months free access to Ancestory.com (supposedly worth £77) - However, on registering, I have to set up a credit card payment for 6 months time !!!
No mention was made on the packaging of this requirement - and I don't intend to do this (No doubt *most* people forget to cancel on-time) - How can they get away with this con ?
I have emailed Tech Support to ask for payment options (telling a little white lie - That I don't own a card)
Anyway - you have been warned - AVOID......

Why is it a con, just set up the payment the expiry date is shown in the left hand column every time you log in and use Family Tree Maker, you can hardly forget to cancel on time.
Millions of people use it, if every one avoided it there would be no one using it.0 -
Just an anti fraud measure to stop people using the same offer multiple times - although if you have other credit cards
You can cancle the renewal option as soon as your account is set up - one button click - dead easy, the 6 month subscription will still run its course.
Their customer service is usually very good.
Not a con.0 -
If you're going to slag off a company, at least spell their name right. It's Ancestry."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

Thanks - I may give that a try......0 -
Poor old Ancestry. They get a right load of stick on here from people who don't read the T&Cs or understand how it works.
I've always found their customer service to be pretty darned good."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
Not a con at all - I call it a good deal. £30 odd for a reasonable piece of software with 6 months free membership of ancestry.com, worth £77, thrown in. And all you've got to do is give them your credit card number and then remember to cancel the following 6 months' subscription in good time.
Nobody needs to worry about forgetting to cancel. Just schedule a date in one of the Calendar addons that come with most webmails (I use Yahoo!). That sends you an email (or two) to remind you before the date.A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove you don't need it.0
