Best/biggest surprise Christmas gift -inexpensive

I thought since we have a thread recounting our most horrific and unwanted Christmas gifts it would be nice to have a thread showing our best gifts and biggest surprises. Just to show we aren't a bunch of ungrateful wretches:D

I'm not talking about lavish gifts like diamond rings, fur coats and new cars - something relatively inexpensive but made you very happy.

As a child, mine was a plastic raincoat and hat which my Canadian aunt sent when I was about 4. I wore in all day on Christmas day, refusing to take it off and there are several photos from that summer , when it was a real heatwave, and I'm wearing the coat and hat. Apparently it wasn't uncommon for me to wear it to bed over my nightdress!

As an adult it had to be a gardener's journal and a pink watering can. The journal is now very dogeared but had been well used and referred to on many occasions. The watering can is still in use which amuses me no end - prior to this I owned dozens of watering cans which all mysteriously vanished as hubby "borrowed" them for use in his yard - strangely he has never borrowed the hot pink one:) I know that's exactly why my mother bought it - smart woman!

My DH had my favourite photo transferred onto canvas - so thoughtful :)
  • When my first son was born, he had surgery at nine hours old. He has Down's syndrome and numerous medical problems. When my daughter saw Father Christmas in a grotto that year, she said that the only present she wanted was for her little brother to get better. He didn't get better, but he did live - something that was uncertain at the time. He is now 13 :)

When I met my husband I told him about a book I'd had as a child that had been my favourite. I only vaguely remembered the title and story and my mum and nan couldn't help much either. Unknown to me he has spent the past 14 years looking for this book. This year with a week to go before christmas he found it but it was in America. He e-mailed the owner with the sketchy details of the story to check he had the right one. It turned up 2 days before Christmas and was the 1st thing he handed to me on Christmas day and he put the gift tag from our kids.

When I was little, I had a baby Sasha doll which was my pride and joy.
At Christmas my mum knitted lots of tiny garments for this doll - vest, pilch (like pants, very old fashioned), cardigan, matinee jacket, leggings, bootees etc etc - and she got a friend who could sew to make a patchwork quilt for the doll's crib, and to make a lovely dress with matching knickers, plastic nappy pants, lots of real towelling nappies etc etc...and my mum and dad sat up late on Christmas Eve wrapping them all in cellophane.
My dad made lots of little labels saying things like, "Chilprufe vest, size 1" and "Harrods Baby Dress and Knickers" and "Harringtons Towelling Napkins". It was so lovely on Christmas morning to open all these things for my beloved doll...like a real layette!

I bought my son a cheapo bodywarmer from Sports Direct for Christmas. He was pleased as punch with it and even more so when he discovered a phone jack in the pocket and earphones in the collar. I didn't know that they were there, it's just lucky that he found them or it would have ended up in the washing machine!

It was the least expensive present he received (around a tenner) and it's the only one that he's been showing off to all of his mates! :D

My most memorable Christmas was when my Gran invited my Sister and myself to her house to name the 2 babies she had just adopted. When we got there the most georgeous baby dolls were all wrapped up and we were given one each. She had knitted lots of clothes to go with them too.
