Please can anyone help or advise.
I have very very recently given up my job as a live in pub manager, moved back to our house to enable me to care full time for my husband who has been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.
For the last 7 years I have not paid any fuel bills as they were part of my salary. Hense to say the time has come for me to pay.
I am currently with British Gas but I am looking for a cheaper provider as I need the heating on quite a lot of the time for my husband.
I also contacted BG and asked for a lower tarriff as I had heard they do this for very ill/ disabled people. This is no longer true and we have to pay the same tarriff with no concessions.
So I am looking for the best provider as its all a bit mind boggling and need it simplyfing xxxx

Can you find any utility bills for the house for the previous year or two?
If so, find out the annual consumption and input the details into a comparison site.
If you can't find out the annual consumption, you can either use the comparison site by saying you don't know your annual spend / consumption (and therefore inputting the property details instead), or input your current spend and tariff - but bear in mind that this will be based on historic prices and not future prices.
If you are in a fixed period tariff, make sure that you won't get penalised for transferring.0 -
Sorry to hear about your situation. All you need to do is get your annual kWH consumption figures from BG and then use a comp site to get the best tariff, it is just a few minutes work. Bear in mind that your future consumption may now increase due to the change in circumstances.
The cheapest tariffs will generally be the online discounted ones, be they variable or fixed.
Make sure you use kWh figures-not monthly DD amounts. No free lunch, and no free laptop

The Essentials tariff is now closed to new entrants, but the agent should have spoken to you about the Warm Home Discount scheme to see if you qualify - it'd be worth speaking to them again to check if you do - it's a one off payment of £120 instead of a reduced tariff.
None of this should negate looking at the best tariff/supplier for your needs. Online are usually cheaper, but keep an eye out for termination fees and take these into account when making a decision.
Has the house been insulated? It might be something else that could help make keeping the house warm easier. Many suppliers will support you in this.0 -
I would hunt out the cheapest gas rate from amongst the suppliers and switch to them as it looks like that will be used the most. Two thirds of my last bill was for gas.0
