John's Phone

Options
Has anyone any experience with a John's Phone?
My 70yo dad cannot get on with a regular mobile, irrelevant of how simplistic it is. I thought about getting him one of these for his birthday in January as he recently had a serious accident and for some reason he said his phone wasn't connecting to mine when he needed me most. He was in a good signal area, as I was, so I can only assume it was him making an error.

  • I got my 73 year old mother one of these;

£29.99 less 6% cashback thru Quidco.

There is a handy SOS button on the back which can be programmed with 3 emergency numbers (relatives?) - just press the red button and the phone will automatically text and call those 3 numbers in order.

A simple slide button locks the phone.

    Nice big display area.

Im still trying to work out how to stop all text messages as Mom doesnt have a clue how to access them - nor voicemail.

    Good Luck
  • Thank you both for your responses. I should have pointed out in my OP that I wanted a phone that just makes calls. My dad can't even get the hang of accessing the phonebook never mind texting. The two things that got me interested in the John's Phone was that it does only makes calls plus it has a pad and pen which would help my dad as he keeps phone numbers on a piece of paper in his wallet. I have tried and tried to help him out but once he goes into the menu he gets confused. The price of the phone is irrelevant considering how serious my dads accident was although I want something that is worth its value.
I'm currently checking out the links posted. Thanks.

I like this one, thanks. I like the SOS feature. This would bring peace of mind.
  • I like the Doro phones Grumbler. Now to work out what has the best features for him. Time to make a brew I think. :)

PMSL - my mother carries a huge notepad round with her and flicks thru the pages for the number she needs.

You need to see peoples faces when she does that in the pub.

In fact, we went shopping on Christmas Eve and I borrowed her phone to call my wife. I can't remember the number as it's programmed into my phone so I dont need to remember it. In the middle of Birmingham Pallasades shopping centre, mom gets the phone book out of her bag and tells me the number. As I typed it into the phone, my wife's number suddenly appeared. I had forgotten that I'd previously programmed them all into her phone.

BTW, the phone I linked to also has an audible number feature which states each number pressed as it's being entered into the phone, which is handy when she's got her head stuck in that flippin book. You can disable the feature too.

EDIT: one thing I forgot. The phone is sim-unlocked so you can use any networks sim card in there. It doesnt do 3G.

My dad actually has a piece of paper which I laminated for him so it doesn't get torn. :rotfl:

I do like the features that phone has. I also like one or two of the Doro phones. His birthday is not for another few weeks yet so still time to make my mind up.

One final thing about the Lloyds Pharmacy one.

The charger for it is like a home phone charger - just drop it into its holder on the sideboard.

No messing with fiddly cables that have fallen down the back of the table and need to be fished out prior to plugging in.

I havent checked but I think Lloyds do free delivery over £30, so be sure to add a pack of plasters to get the price over that mark.

No, I dont work for Lloyds or the manufacturer.

I finally settled on this phone. Thank you for the recommendation. So far so good. My family liked the SOS feature and its now the phone we are considering buying for my Aunt who is in her early 80's.
