Viewing a property for first time buyers

I have a question,
When you first go to view a property, do the estate agents check you out straight away when giving your name and address and credit ref checks or only when you actually enter into an agreement with them to say you are interested in that particular property?
I ask as you could view quite a few of them via various estate agents.
Plus does the estate agent go with you to view property with you or just give you the keys to view yourself and then ask you to return keys later to the estate agency?
See with council property its different, they just give you keys and you go and look yourself and then you return keys later and let them know if interested or not.
When you first view a property what do they require from you exactly? Do you have to sign anything even at just viewing stage?
As you can see I am new to this. Just wanted to know before approaching really.

You don't have to sign anything or give any details to view a place but it's helpful to give at least your name and number!0

Sounds like a squatters dream.0 -
Are you a buyer or a tenant?
Either way, there is no rule.
Is the property being viewed empty or occupied?
Nowadays few agents will hand out keys, and few sellers or landlords would want their agent to hand out keys.
Most agents will want to check who you are, take name/address at least.
But if you're thinking of the costs of credit checking as a prospective tenant, for example, then no, that would come later.0 -
Yes, your thread title talks about being a First Time Buyer, but you appear to be referring, here and in other threads, to rental properties....0
