You need to ensure you have a 450 or 600mm space next to the sink unit to house the dishwasher. Check that this space doesnt have any bits sticking too far out from the back wall as this will cause the DW to stick out into the room.

Your waste linking kit may have a spare spigot to connect the dishwasher waste to. If not, a new waste linking kit is about £15-20.

You will need cold water supply for the DW and this may be the biggest problem if you haven't got one. however, nothing that a competent plumber cant sort out in an hour.

Suggest you get a plumber to survey the job and quote. Assuming you need a new waste linking kit and a new cold water feed, this should cost around £80-100 labour plus materials.

A freestanding diswasher is usually height adjustable between ~825-875mm.

Thank you - that is really helpful! I really do appreciate this.

I think I may need a different cabinet for the sink now, a sort of single one with just a bowl - is that about right? My neighbour will almost certainly help out, or supervise his son doing it with this.

I feel sure that a plumber will be able to sort out the water supply - the dishwasher will be between the sink and a washing machine, so that should be possible.

I really do appreciate the help - thank you.

If you're bending over the sink to wash up, and that sends the back into spasm, then the simple solution is to raise the sink unit so that you're standing up straight at the sink. Measure from the floor to the tips of your fingers when your arms are hanging by your side, and this is roughly the height where you want the base of the sink to be.

I'm 6ft3in, and whilst the worktops/sink in our kitchen are fine for OH, I can't spend more than 5 mins washing dishes for the same reason. That's my excuse for not doing them, anyway.....
