Automatic Renewal

Options
Last year I purchased my boyfiends car insurance on my debit card (I had the funds avaliable buy the full years insuranse which worked out much cheaper than him paying the monthly installments).
We have since split up and his insurance is shortly due for renewal - I am 90% sure he will sort this out and remove my card from his insurance account, however incase he does nothing and opts for an automatic renewal is there anything I can do to prevent the money being taken from my account?

Thanks

If you have the insurance company details, then tell them that you refuse the card to be used. They cant disclose details to you but as it is your card, they can accept your instructions not to use your card.

Or you can play it safe and cancel the card and as the card provider to send out a new one with a new number.

  • The safest way is just phone up your bank and tell them you've lost your debit card, they'll send you a new one out with a new CCV code & expiry date so no one would be able to draw money off your card unless you told them your new details (Direct Debits are uneffected)
  • If the insurance company has a continuous payment authority set up on the card, then the only way to cancel this is to write to the insurance company concerned. Cancelling the card will not stop the payment.

This advice is spot on and I'd also ask them to confirm in writing. Do not tell your bank you have lost your card. The payment will still go through.
  • Thanks for the responses - ery helpful! What information woud I need to send to the insurance company? I don't have a policy number or anything like that would they be able to process just my card number? (is it secure to send them my bank card details by mail?)

Will my ex definitely be contacted by the insurance company before his renewal date? - I trust him to change it if he's aware a change is needed - however he's not the most organised person in the world! Don't want to cause him to be uninsured by canceling my card!

By far the best approach would be to get your Ex to contact the insurance company and make sure your card is not used for the payment.

Failing that, ask your Ex for the insurance policy details so that you can write a letter to remove your continuous payment authority from the insurer so they cannot use your debit card

This is a very dubious area, as the contract is with your ex, and you only gave the insurer a one off payment, so they can't claim they sent you any details of any other continuous payment authority etc.

If the payment was taken, you are well within your rights to reclaim it via the bank,as it's not an authorised payment.
However it will leave your ex subject to having to repay the insurers, possibly having the insurance cancelled, debt collectors etc.
  • I suggest the following to do:

    1. Talk to your ex and ask him to get your card details taken off his insurance.
    2. If 1 doesn't work, call the insurance company and tell them not to use your card as you allowd the use of the card for one year only. Make sure you note down the name of the person you speak over the phone and time of the call and possibly get a reference for the call. If they refuse to do so, ask them what is the legal way to cancel the instructions.
    3. If you dont't get positive results from first two steps, talk to your bank and ask them how they can stop this possible payment.

I am sure you will be able to get the solution in one of the above steps.

    Cheers
