We are looking to get ourselves a new to us car and are wanting to do the checks on its past. Where is it cheapest to do this please?

Please don't go for the cheapest. You get the barest of information. Go for one that offers insurance so if it turns out the HPI information was incorrect, you can claim from them.

go to https://www.hpicheck.com, it also comes with free 7-day drive away insurance which is very handy, it does cost £20 but they cover you for £30,000 if the car turns out to be illegal (only if u HPI before u buy)

AA, RAC, HPI. May sound expensive to the £3 text checks that tell you tons of useless information
yet offer zero assurance as to the accuracy of the data you bought.

Autoexpress magazine did a test some time back and several cheap ones failed to disclose the vehicles
full history, One had been written off and one was still on finance.
