I bought a computer on amazon for somebody and paid with a visa debit card. The advert specified that the OS software is genuine, I paid with a visa debit card.

The computer arrived but I didn't look at it in detail because I'm ill, opened on Christmas morning and the plug is broken (top prong is missing). We went to maplin yesterday to get a new plug sorted so we can charge it and the tech guy said he didn't think the software is genuine!

Bought a plug and took it home but the unit won't charge!

I've emailed the seller but what do I do from there? They're hardly going to admit to selling fakes are they? Can I do a chargeback on my card? If so how does that work?

    okay.
so you didnt buy from Amazon?
you bought from a marketplace seller?
Amazon have a buyer protection system
I suggest you log in and use that
"didnt think it was genuine" so you don't know?

So a shop person didn't think it as genuine. No actual proof either way. Why not get a proper opinion or use it and see if it activates and updates.
Oh, and you had better edit the title. Amazon certainly didn't sell you a fake and they have lots of lawyers working for them that would confirm you libelled them by saying such...

The software may be genuine but unlicensed - licensing is complicated and varies company by company, but it usually boils down to some kind of physical 'thing' with the license key printed on it. Some licenses are transferrable, others not. Very hard to tell indeed.

Try emailing the software manufacturer to ask, then take it up with the vendor/through Amazon if it turns out to be pirated.

I'd have sent it back for being delivered with a broken plug - or at least have got the seller to provide you with a new one.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler

The seller doesn't accept returns so I can't send it back for that (this seems to have changed because I specifically checked the returns policy before I bought, there's no return address on the invoice). First part of a claim through A to Z is to contact the seller so I've done that, how long should I give for them to get back to me?
