Problems connecting to internet - new USB adapter

I've today installed a new netgear USB wireless adapter on my PC. It seems to have installed fine and its picking up a strong signal, however it is constantly 'acquiring network address' and I can't seem to connect to the internet.

Any clues?

Thanks

I agree with the correct password requirement - but surely the encryption type is handled automatically, if supported?

How far is the PC from the wireless router? What make & model of router is it? There should be a speed figure on the box for the Mbps: 150/300/ etc. If the USB dongle is incompatible with the router, too far from it, you have thick house walls or other obstructions between them, that may be the cause. OR interference from other radio/electrical sources. Check what else is on and working whilst you attempting to connect. If you have a friend with a wireless laptop, ask to borrow it. Disable (temporarily) the wireless card in the lappy and put the dongle into a USB port on the lappy. Start trying to connect from the area of the PC, then gradually work in towards the router.

I would also have a careful read of the guide/manual that came with the USB dongle.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
