Its a bit of a minefield I think, this. Just sorted out my mother's insurance this year with Aviva, and the certificate said to the effect of 'her car and any car loaned to her whilst hers is being repaired, serviced or MOT'd'. Last year with Admiral it just said 'her car and any car loaned to her by an Admiral approved accident repair centre', i.e. insurance repair courtesy cars only.

Seeing as how your car is being repaired under warranty I would have thought the garage/warranty company should sort out insurance for the loan car FOC.

I've had it both ways in the past. About 5 or 6 years ago I have to have my car in for warrenty work and they ended up keeping the car for 2 weeks. They gave me a courtesy car, but I had to insure myself. Cost about £15 a week for a Ford Ka.

Then about 2 years ago I took my car back to the same place as it started to make a strange noise. The workshop was closed, so they gave me a courtesy car, gave me a form to sign, and never charged me a penny for the car, or the repair as it turned out to be something minor.

Also my insurance lets me drive cars not owned by me with 3rd party cover, which would also cover me.
  • Some insureres will cover you for courtesy cars automatically, some may require a phone call to let them know.

You pay for the service however you do it, better insurers are usually but not always more expensive in the first place.

If a dealer is charging you for a courtesy car whilst they are fixing yours then its high time you found a proper main dealer, usually one make stands out head and shoulders above others for care, service and value.

Last time i got a courtesy car from a garage, their customer insurance had a massive policy excess - kind of scary if you just sign without reading the small print.
