Am sitting here really deep in thought. I posted a reply to Recovering regardingthe Chickenpie and said what my Mum would have done.

I visited my Mum in hospital today, another fall, not bad this time, she fell out of bed but thankfully didnt break anything this time.

We were there at tea time and got up to leave but the Carer asked us to stay and see if we could get her to eat anything as they were getting rather concerned.

She started off with cheese pie, mashed potato and Brocoli , looked really nice but she refused to eat it unless we could get some gravy. My SIL went to explain andcame backwith two packs of butter. She mashed this into the potato but Mum had only a couple of spoonfuls and said it was horrible. The carer then brought a Strawberry Whip with Cream. Mom had a taste and said it was too sweet. They then brought ham sandwiches and crisps Mum said the Ham was tough and only ate half a crisp. Then they brought a beautiful Strawberry Gateux but she only ate a few spoons
before asking for Custard. My daughter was quite distraught and wanted to goto the vending machine to get her some but I told her I thought whatever we did was not going to suit her Nan today.

Sorry for the ramble, just feel so so sad, very grateful to the hospital for trying so hard, and bloody glad I am not responsible for their budget.

Oh and apart from travelling costs today was a no spend.I took a pork chop out of the freezer before I went but didnt feel like eating when I got back so it will do for tommorow.

NSD number 1 :j. LO spag bol turned into a pasta bake last month lifted from the freezer for tea. I will try to leave the shopping until Tuesday. The children go back to school on Wednesday so I will need some bits and pieces. Or maybe I'll just get creative. Fruit might be a problem though . Bother.

    Hi

Could I join in please? My monthly food/household stuff budget is £350 for 4 adults. I would like to reduce this if possible in future months.

My month will be 3rd Jan to 2nd Feb.

    Thank you!

  • Recovering - sorry to hear of your fall, wishing you a fast recovery. With regards to different meals, mine get what they are given, I do give a choice, like shall i do spag bol or chicken curry, etc, but once decided, thats it and they would not ask for something else. Maybe you could include them in meal planning. Aberdeen Saver - well done, it does make you smile when you feel you[ve made savings. Byatt, i mainly use cash. The theory is monthly budget, broken up into weeks, anything left over from the week, goes into a pot, which then gets used for bulk buys/saving pots, does not quite work out like that, but i live in hope it will. Debtfree - thanks v much for the freezing link - i will defo be using that in future. Destroyerof - I thought my budget was lean, i take my hat off to you, good luck to you with yours. Meg72 lol at the breadcrumbs - i really wish i was that thrifty, maybe one day. I think i might save chicken bones in freezer for a stock pot, that will be a start.

Just wondered if people take out their monthly budget from the bank and use cash? I think I will need to do this as taking a card makes me spend more than I need, especially if I see "baragains!"

I have a seperate account that the grocery money goes into as I do a lot of online shopping due to not driving and the supermarkets being out of town and the buses being crapola

Some take the money out of the bank and keep a seperate purse for it.

Others just keep tabs from their main account.

It depends on everyones different circumstances.

No more spends here so far. Yay! as the kids are not at school till Thursday I will have to nip out for bread and milk at some point during the week but hopefully not tomorrow.

If anyone is having troubles with leftover turkey/chicken I can recommend HM plate pies. we had a turkey enough to feed 12 from Iceland which was yummy on Christmas day dinner (4 people) and evening buffet for extended family (9 people) among other things however only used half as we had a SC gammon joint too.

I made 2 pies on boxing day one with turkey, TV curry sauce, onion, pepper and carrot. Also one with turkey, white sauce, onions, carrots, garlic, bacon bits and TV mixed herbs. both made on dinner plates with HM shortcrust pastry. Each pie would feed 6 as part of a meal with potatoes and veg or 4 on it's own and used store cupboard/freezer ingredients up.

If veg isnt a fave in your house use shortcrust pastry rolled in to a rectangle spread on left over pate, sprinkle on sliced onions then diced turkey roll up like a swiss roll using a tea towel or cling film and bake in the oven for a turkey wellington.
