You are entitled to an exchange or credit note if it's not been worn, however I think this is only if you can provide proof of purchase. This does not have to be a till receipt. If your friend purchased it using a card, you can use a bank statement with the amount on. Were the tags attached or removed from it? I can see why the sales assistant thought it had been worn if the tags were already removed and you may have a problem proving that you haven't worn it!

With regards to your Asda items, the staff were right to refund you only the amount that they are now on sale for, if you did not have proof of purchase with the original purchase price on. If you did have proof, then you would have entitled to that amount.

If you have no receipt and the tags aren't attached then I would say there is no chance any shop would ever give you an exchange for that, and it was a gift then the person that bought it for you shouldnt have taken the tags off it.

Why didnt you just exchange the pjs in asda so you had both the same size instead of taking the money back?
  • Hi there Emms
Asda didnt have the sizes in,it wasnt the pjs on the hangers it was disney ones that where put together and stacked up,like a presents so you wouldnt of known the sizes only the worker at asda that done it,but ya even though i had a diff size in top and bottoms thay didnt have any there so someone else out there has the same problem, just cant believe with a recipt didnt get the full price back but the sale price x
  • It's down to store policy, by law unless the item is faulty they don't have to accept a return although many shops have policies stating that they allow you to retrun within 30/14 days etc. If you have a receipt you can return items that are detagged as long as you have the tag to return with the item. If it is detagged I doubt anystore would accept a return without a receipt, not many stores allow returns without receipts, not even gift vouchers unless they are 100% sure they item was from them. Often the person buying will be asked if they would like a gift receipt so the recipient can exchange an item without knowing the price paid. Otherwise you will have to get the buyer to take the items back for you for an exchange, if they have no receipt a bank/card statement showing the purchase may be sufficient.

  • Hay savvybunny thankyou for ur insight and everyone else,i just spoke to her and she wasnt given a gift recipt, she brought it on the 23 dec, looks like im stuck with a small jacket grrrrr, thank you all for ur help xoxo
  • You are only ENTITLED to a receipt if the item is faulty - not if it doesn't fit or the recipient doesn't like it though most large stores will offer an exchange with proof of purchase.

Proof of purchase does not have to be a receipt - a credit card or bank statement showing the purchase should be sufficient. Did your relative pay with card or cash?

    I'm afraid that's not right.

You got a £6 cash refund from Asda, all yu had to do was buy something/anything else in the sale for £6 which had been reduced and you would still have the same value item, simple.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

So you had a receipt? In that case they should have given you a full refund as you had PJ's that are not fit for purpose, ie if you are size 12 the size 14 bottoms are not going to fit. Personally I would have asked to see a manager about this one.
