My friend couldn't wait to finally get her deeds from Abbey National...... she has paid through thick and thin over 20 years never missing a payment although at times it meant beans on toast for a week! Her mortgage finished at the end of February. She telephoned Abbey National and asked for the deeds to be sent to her along with a very small check they owed her. She was informed that she would have to pay £40 for the deeds!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say she was OUTRAGED and sent a letter to the Chief Executive voicing her opinion.
Yesterday she got a phone call from the head office, they apologised profusely that she had been given the wrong information, and that in fact the cost would be.................................. WAIT FOR IT!!!!............................ £80!!!!
Is this 'normal' practice? if so it stinks! oh yes, and she still hasn't received her cheque!

Yes it stinks -- but does your friend really need the deeds in her possession? I thought that if you left '£1 outstanding' on the mortgage, the Abbey National would look after the deeds safely (for free) but then charge your friend to view the deeds if she ever needed to. It would be much safer (and cheaper) to leave the deeds with Abbey until your friend really 'needs' them.0
