Can I suggest you work in retail and then see how it is. You get numpty/rude customers all time some wanting to take this Mick or be awkward. If you want to get served before shop closes leave plenty of time otherwise I suggest go and shop else where if you dont like it, I am sure the staff would be pleased you did.
Do you feel better after a moan you seem to be pretty good at that

I get that staff are people too and they have homes to go to but that is not my problem as far as I'm concerned. I really don't see why half of this thread has been dedicated to retail workers complaining about customers coming in at the last minute and being inconsiderate. What time you start or finish is none of my concern. That is between you and the shop. My concern is if the shop states the opening hours are x until y hours. I expect to be able to enter the shop to purchase goods up until y hours. If not then it should be clearly stated on the door that the shop closes it's doors ten minutes early.0 -
Maybe these selfish people wouldn't mind working extra themselves, many staff have lives or need to get away on time to pick kids/get late night bus etc. You always get odd one who only think about themselves and not othersaliaslotte wrote: »After last night, where I left work 15 minutes late because of customers entering the store when we had closed, I feel the need to post lol. At work, we can only shut the shutters together - rather than having one open and one closed. So, we tend to put them 1/4 of the way down about 2 minutes before we close, to discourage anyone else from coming in but so as to not lock in the customers already in store. Last night, a handful of customers continued to browse after the 5.30pm close time and then - to add to the annoyance - two customers ducked under the shutters and started browsing too! There is no security guard at the store and the manager was upstairs, so we had no option but to wait for them to come to the till and pay. Whilst I understand that people don't always care about shop workers, it is flat rude to browse around a store at closing time lol! The time stated is when you should have paid and be out of the store again, not the last moment you can run in and then take your time... I guess I find it so annoying because it isn't something I would do. I'm not a 'last minute' kind of shopper.
I miss the days when I worked at a big electrical company. They had the 'lock the doors at quarter to' policy and the security guard would then make announcements every 5 minutes to inform the customers instore that we were closing. Whilst I would still have to work beyond my time [as I had to reconcile the tills], it did mean that most of the customers had been served and had left the store by closing time.0 -
There is this woman customer I got to tell you about. She pops in at 3:30pm on most Sundays and slowly strolls around the store thinking she has all the time in the world. She only manages to reach 2/3 of the store when its 4pm. Our store is 2.5 times smaller than the average supermarket. The manager politely reminds her that the store is closed. At 4:05pm, she goes to the checkout and pays. She takes 40 mins packing her shopping in the trolley and bags! We have to stay until she has gone home!
Two things that annoy us 1. She lives SEVEN minutes walk from the store - a colleague lives almost opposite her. 2. She is retired. Its not like she has miles to go or has no time!0 -
The other month, I was told that I had 1.5 hours lieu to use. I asked where's that from? The member of HR said its when I clocked out a few mins later than scheduled due to idiot customers that have no consideration about supermarket staff. This was about 10 weeks worth.
May I suggest that if you have to stay longer than your contracted time, because of these customers, you may not get paid for the time, but ask if there is any lieu time created because of this.0 -
Our charity shop closes at 1pm on most days. We have one customer who always walked in at 5 to 1, saying, 'I know you're about to close but...' In the end we tried saying each time 'Oh it must be 1 because xxxx is here', to her. Found out in the end she meets friends in the cafe opposite at 1pm, who are usually late, so walks into town and the uses our shop to wait in until her friends arrive in the cafe!DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. It's always those who don't/haven't work in customer facing positions who come out with the selfish "It's not my problem" "I should be able to walk in at closing time and wander for half an hour". Often they look down on people who "Only work in a shop". Says more about them than the shop workers IMOI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

duchy, I agree, although I ended up a maths teacher, I spent 6 years stacking shelves in an Asda, and it really annoys me know when people not working refuse to even apply for jobs in a supermarket because they think its beneath them.
Also surely common sense means that if a shop says its closing by a certain time, customers are to be out by that time. As mentioned in other posts, some can take over half an hour to go round doing their shopping.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0 -

And some muppet who needs something so desperately right before closing... Why should the staff care that you can't organise yourself more effectively?Because it's fun to have money!

My local Lidl closes early quite often. You can arrive 30 mins before closing to find it locked up.0

Ironically we tried to close our charity shop at 1pm today, a lady walked in before we could lock the door, we told her we were closed, she ignored us and went into our backroom, then came out saying that the lights were off in there. Again we explained we were closed, and politely asked her to leave. Again she ignored us and spent 10 minutes looking at belts despite repeated requests for us to be able to leave. On most days I would stay open because I don't like turning customers awaym but today we all had places to go, and this woman was totally ignorant and moaned as we finally locked the door. This is the sort of ungrateful attitude from customers that makes volunteers feel worthless.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0
