  • These sites always rip you off. You're much better off getting accidental damage and/or personal belongings cover on your household insurance.

Protect Your Bubble is a genuine operator, backed by a large insurance company.

The advantage over including these items in your household cover is that you are far more likely to claim on a gadget / phone etc, and it means you won't lose your No Claims Bonus on your household insurance for the sake of a modest claim.

I never said they aren't genuine, I'm simply pointing out that you will always pay over the odds to insure items in this way.

It quotes £6 a month to insure my iPhone but my entire contents cover is only £14 a month. Nuff said.

It would be interesting to see how much a Contents Insurance company would charge for comparable cover. I would have thought that a phone would be considered high risk, and probably not included as standard.

Does your £14 a month include iPhone cover ?

I've never check comparables myself, so genuinely interested ...

Im not sure what you mean by comparable cover. A mobile phone, laptop, tablet etc will all be covered providing you have sufficient insurance to cover them. My £14 a month insures me up to £75k.

On top on that it covers me for accidental damage & personal belongings cover up to £2k so yes, my iPhone is covered.

I would check that the don't exclude those items without additional premiums, or not cover them outside the house.

As I am sure you will appreciate, not all insurance is the same, and some have exclusions.

Not suggesting for a second your cover is not the same, just that you need to check rather than assume.

Also, not everyone has contents cover at all - especially if you are renting, not living at home etc

I appreciate what you're saying but I'm an insurance broker for a living.

By definition, personal belongings cover offers additional cover for items you regularly take out of the house, such as mobile phones, laptops etc.

My policy does specify that I have to declare high value items, but only when the value of an individual item exceeds £1,000.

I rent the house I live in, and one of the principals of insurance is that you must have an insurable interest to enable you to take out valid cover against it. However, most policies will have provisions built in for fixtures & fittings as your insurable interest is that you're responsible for the upkeep of them.
