Car Insurance - New Driver?

Question on car insurance for my son. He is a new driver and will be 20 years old next month. If he buys a car and I insure it under my name with him as a named driver, I have +10 years NCD, what happens if he has an accident, would it be my NCD that is affected or his NCD?

You'd get prosecuted for fronting!.....0

Besides the possible issue of "Fronting" the other obstacle you will find is that you earn one set of no claims bonus per policy, when you buy a second car (Almost impossible when the second car has a young driver) it is difficult to find an Insurer who will allow you to use your no claims bonus on a second car.0

In that case he wiil have to insure himself. What is the best way (if any) to minimise the premiums?0

Ignore the scaremongering about getting prosecuted for fronting.
As long as your son is named as the main driver then fronting isn't an issue.
Your NCD will only be affected if you use it on this new car (ie transfer it from your own, maybe by putting the new car on your existing policy and getting a new policy for your car).
This will be the best use of your NCD (as you will be getting the max discount off the most expensive premium), though it would be affected if there is a claim (if it's not protected).0 -
Would suggest you try Aviva for insurance. They have been far cheaper for insurance for my son who is now 22 than any other company.Appreciate that it can depend when you apply and area you stay in etc.My son put insurance in his own name with me as a named driver .He is driving a 1.1 Renault Clio. His first year (2010) was approx £1200 and then this year approx £900.He is obviously building up his own no claims bonus.0

I'm 23 years old with 3 years NCB and insurance for me on my own is £1,459 a year (2000 Ford Focus 1.8) BUT if I add my mother and her partner onto my policy as named drivers it drops to only £789 a year.
So let him insure it in his own name but add 1-2 older people onto the policy as named drivers.0 -
Yeah just be careful around the fronting issue.0
