Tumble Dryer part help

I have a Whirlpool condenser dryer - pretty sure it's this one (if not it's very similar). Anyway my small problem is that the knob which you turn to set the timing seems to be possessed. Actually, that's an exaggeration - at some point during the cycle the knob catapults off the machine and can be later found rolling around the garage floor at varying distances from the dryer. Pretty much each time I use the dryer I have to reattach the knob.
Hubby has told me just to order a new knob however I'm not convinced that will solve the problem- I think it must be missing something else - any thoughts?

With many things like that, there is often a metal spring clip that goes round the split shaft on the back of the knob, or a couple of plastic wedge shape clip things.
Looking at the spare for yours, theres a ring of 3 or 4 clips, are the intact on your existing one? If they are, they may need persuading outwards a little. They are quite delicate, so wont need much encouragment. Saying that, they will need to go out a bit and stay out.
The plastic on these things is normally flimsy and brittle.0 -
Thanks - there doesn't seem to be any metal clip so that could well be the problem.
There do seem to be some wedge shaped pieces but they are very brittle and I suspect maybe they would snap if I pulled them. Maybe I will just go ahead and order a new dial to get the ball rolling.0
