Travel claim turns up on home policy

Options
I made a claim on my travel ins as I lost a camera on holiday.
I have just had the renewal in for my home contents/building ins and it says I have had a claim. Turns out it's for the camera. How come if I claim from my travel ins they take it from my home ins?
If I had wanted to claim from the home ins I would have.

Your travel insurance may well say that if it's covered by your home insurance that's where you must claim,

But they didn't say anything at all to me. I only found out as my home ins is due for renewal.
Surely they should have said that I should claim on my home ins and if that's the case why do I need to pay for extra travel ins (apart from health reasons)

You need to give more information. Were the Travel and Home policies with the same provider? Was the claim paid, and if so was it paid from the Travel policy or the Home policy? Does the Home renewal say that a claim has been made against that policy or does it just say that you have made a claim since the last renewal? If, as I suspect, it's the latter, then that's an understandable situation, most policies will ask if you have made any claims, which applies to claims made under other policies, not just the one you are renewing.

When you made the claim were you asked if you had other insurance e.g. home policy? There is likely to be a contribution clause in each policy which means that if there are two policies under which the claim could be made, each will pay it's proportionate share.

Does the Home renewal say that a claim has been made against that policy or does it just say that you have made a claim since the last renewal? The claim was made ON the policy

I think I was asked if I had home cover on the claim form, but never thought they would claim against it.

If you have home contents cover with the personal possessions add-on, it is this cover you should claim against for a camera away from home.

If the claim was settled against the travel/holiday insurance because you don't have personal possessions cover, you'd still be bound by the insurer's requirement to disclose all losses whether insured or not, if that is what's required in your renewal T&Cs.

As you knew the camera claim was settled by the home insurance policy, I'm surprised you're surprised it shows on your renewal notice. Did you query why this happened at the point of settlement?

You can also buy travel insurance for just the bits you need - e.g. if you have items covered under your home policy, don't pay for this on the travel.

They may still show it as a claim, but they should not reduce your no claims discount as a result of a contribution claim from a travel insurer (ABI Personal Effects Agreement section 3)

I didn't know until I saw the renewal for my home policy. I contacted the travel firm and got this reply.
    Hi,

It’s standard practice in insurance that if another type of policy covers the same risk e.g. loss of personal possessions then that policy makes a contribution to the cost of the claim.

In your case, what has happened is that the travel insurance provider has contacted your home insurance provider and asked them to pay some of the cost. It’s called “subrogation” and actually happens quite a lot.

If your claim had been for medical expenses then 100% of the cost would have been met by the travel insurance policy.
