I have just got OH to get 2 pints off the milkman and he came back with a pint of silver top and a pint of sterilised...havent had that in ages and was £1.08 for both:confused: ...is that good?

He gave OH a price list which I have in front of me and prices dont seem so bad. Here are some prices and they are Dairy Crest:

    1 pint of milk 49p
1 pint of organic milk 65p
    Milkshakes 1 pint 55p
    1 pint pure OJ/apple/grapefruit 89p
    Organic yogurts 4 x 125g £1.69
    Organic Veggie box £11.00
    Organic Fruit box £9.00
    Organic mixed box £14.00
    Free Range Eggs 6 99p
    Kingsmill loaf £1.05
    Salad/New spuds 1kg 85p
    4 Baking Spuds 99p
    7.5kg spuds £3.00
    Fizzy pop 1 litre 45p
    Cream 81p
    Longlife yogurts 4 x125g 89p
    Cheddar 400g £3.09
    Butter 250g 99p
    Bacon 200g £1.79
    Broken Biscuits 1.3kg £2.29

There is loads more including household, pet food and garden stuff. Also havent included water, other milks, tea bags, coffee etc.

    Are these good prices?

Thinking about ordering some bits weekly, but not sure what. I save up all my silver and this could easily pay for this. You can also pay with cheque monthly if its not more than a couple of pound a week

    Hi Pennypincher! Another rebel! :j

The price list is very useful, thank you. I am also using MySupermarket, recommended by Martin to get an idea of cost comparisons.

The ordinary milk, free range eggs, kingsmill bread and organic fruit and veg boxes look about average (depending on box contents) I pay £10 for a small box of organic fruit and veg - 5 veg 3 fruit types. I am paying 90p a litre for organic milk from Abel and Cole. The cheese looks a good price as well. Don't forget the free delivery, very handy for the spuds etc, Tesco charge for this (unless you have a voucher).

Would be worth doing a small order and seeing how you go.

I think the price list is very reasonable considering it`s delivered to your door, plus you can reduce or add the amount you want each week.

Not sure about the broken bickies, cheaper to make your own and have whole ones.

Today I will be going to Asda, but only to drop an application form off,my mind is strong at the moment not to buy anything or even have a browse round but we`ll see how it is when I get through the doors.

Our weekday market is on today so I`m going to have a look over just before packing up time to see if I can grab any bargins.

  • Hi Rebels!

Wonder if you can help me - any ideas welcome - on saturdays I go to the local market, chemist (for nappies mainly) and butchers. It is a 30 min walk and I take my trusty trolley to carry everything back. The problem I have is dairy stuff - where are you all buying your milk, cheese, marg, butter, yoghurts etc? I end up having a Tesco's order every couple of weeks to stock up on things like this as I don't know where else to get them. I'm awkward and want organic milk for the littlies but the corner shop doesn't seem to have this. Also my corner shop is affiliated with sainsburys so they have alot of sainsburys products on their shelves. There is no milkman around here which I'm disappointed about as I used to have a really good one that would bring alsorts of other stuff including meat from the local butcher.........it's quite difficult sometimes.
    Any help appreciated!

Anyone know where I would get dried yeast from for using in the BM? Thnk that`ll have to be a supermarket jobby?
Our local health shop sells it.

Not working today, so I had a long walk into and around town. Bought veg and cheese in the fruit n veg shop (all locally sourced), tea in the health shop, but then bought milk and yoghurt at Morrisons (but not Tesco, ha!) Not happy about having to use the supermarket, would love to be able to do without them completely, but can't afford to have te milk delivered, as we use loads. So far have seen organic milk in the fruit n veg shop, but only 1pt cartons at 49p. Maybe I can buy some of that, therefore reducing my supermarket milk?
I'll keep on looking where else I can get things....

...oh, and I've walked 6 miles, so free gym as well ;)

  • hi... penny-pincher... you are rebel no 13 welcome aboard....

the list of prices that you have mentioned dont seem that bad....... kingsmill bread £1.05....... i pay that at the bakers for bread.....andi think it was 88p in tescos......plus dont forget it is delivered..... so when you look at the prices....... some things might be a bit more expensive.... but you havent got petrol costs.... weat and tare on the car etc..... plus you dont get impulse spends......

i eventually got to the organic shop in ammanford today to have a nose........suma organic tinned toms were 65p.....and oraganic tomato puree. was about the same..... i also picked up organic corn for making popcorn...and that was 99p.. which to be honest i thought was good value as the pack size was 500g........this could fill the gap of snacking for the kids.... they can make their own popcorn.....

they didnt have a huge amount of variety.... but as they said.. they are adding all the time...... they do an organic box scheme.......which i think i will miss on for a mo if i need to keep to a budget as well...........and go to the local markets to buy fruit and veg.....

i picked up some free mag type leaflets from there as well as will have a nose at them later.....

hi... hopeElizzy...........have you tried looking at the bigbarn site to see whats in your area........also you might find that butchers might sell butter... cheese......etc......what area are you from..? ...as some one on here if they are close to you might be able to recommend some places.......

Oooo can I have a number too (gosh sounds a bit like "can I have a p Bob - gameshow (Blockbuster I think) from years ago in case anyone's wondering). 7 is my lucky number so if I can be rebel no 14 then it's twice as lucky.

I haven't been near T's all week. I'll continue to use Lidls or Somerfields (which took over the local Spar shop) for storecupboard stuff but will use butchers, greengrocers or local farm shop (when I find one).
