My Vista is very slow - I have uninstalled Norton and replaced with Avast which helps - but grateful for any further advice.

how much ram?
do you need the aol/talk talk/symantec software installed?
do you use lightscribe discs - if not, disable the service using services.msc
disable windows defender - see sticky thread for instructions.
you could disable these using msconfig/startup tab, and re-enable (or run manually) if you notice any problems subsequently.

vista doesn't really work on less than 1.5GB of RAM if tweaked down a bit, ideally 2GB is needed, so yes, upgrade your RAM for vista if you want it to run significantly better

If you've been following the sticky, you should have CCleaner installed - go to Tools (lhs) > Startup, and you can probably disable everything in that list except your antivirus. highlight the entry by left-click on it, then use the Disable button on the right. Then reboot. If any issues happen, you can just re-enable the offending process in the same bit of CCLeaner.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
