How do you tell what ink is compitable with a certain printer?

Probably a silly question but I have a HP C4180 All in one printer, just for home use, which has run out of ink.
The Black ink inside reads 'HP BLACK PRINT CARTRIDGE 336'. Does this mean that 336 is the only black ink cartridge that will work in this printer?
I have looked at this online and the 336 gets slated for running out very quickly and is dear for what it is. I Want to find out if another HP ink would fit/work but am having difficulty! Hopefully someone can help thanks

Other HP cartridges with different codes won't be suitable but there are plenty of companies who produce cheaper compatable alternative cartridges for it.
Cartridge World in High Streets or Tesco and Asda supermarkets or online 7dayshop are examples but there are dozens of others.
A trawl through threads about ink jet cartridges on this forum will provide actual recommendations.
The first cartridges supplied with HP printers are usually 16ml fills instead of the replacement cartridges they supply which have a larger fill (25ml I think).0 -
Does it use the HP 337?
These do a refill by post at £7 for black and £9 for colour

I have a C4280 printer which uses 350/351 cartridges. I found the 350 very easy to refill. I bought a JR refill kit from Aldi and had it refilled within 5 minutes.
I am sure the 336 would be just as easy, there is no new hole to drill, the existing one is open. You can fill the cartridge to the point of overflow which will be more than originally contained. In my case there was a youtube video showing how to do the job which gave me some confidence.
One downside is that the ink monitor does not show the correct ink level and never will.
I am now waiting for Aldi to to have the colour kit in their weekly offerings but they have not had either in for quite some time, but they are available elsewhere.0 -
I just look at eBay. There are a lot of compatible ink available for much cheaper price e.g less than £7.00in "buy it now"
for instance these one cost £6.46.
