Buying a house in joint name

Please I would like to know what happens if buying a house in joint name and the other person is not available to sign the contract e.g taking a yr off to travel? Is it possible for somebody to sign the contract for him e.g his father? I think, I better explain myself, I am looking to help my daughter and son to buy a property in joint name, the daughter will live in it and the son will have a room as he is looking for a job in London. My son has got itchy feet and likes to travel. I just want to know what will happen if we find a house and he is not there to sign the contract. I guess, I can still go ahead with the daughter but it would not be fair on him and again we cannot wait for him to settle down. What other options, do I have? I also understand you do not have to be in the solicitor's office to sign the contract, it could be done by post. When buying how many contract do you have to sign, is it only one? Thanks

    Two options that I am aware of

    I have exchanged and completed on a house from South Africa where I was working for a few weeks by having the contracts faxed to me and then faxing them back signed.

    I have also made a purchase on behalf of someone else and used "power of attorney" to do so.

    I can't see this being an issue - you just need to get it all organised. Talk to your solicitors and see what they suggest.
