Hope this is the correct forum for my Q.
Just got my license (automatic) and am looking for cheap car insurance. Not too fussed about the car as long as its less than £ 3k and cheap to insure. Last I had a full license was in the USA where I drove for around 4 years but that was 7 tyears ago. I dont think that will help me get NCDs here??
Am trying comparison websites and others that are not on there like direct line. Live in croydon, which probably doesn't help too much with insuracne :-). Age 34; didnt need a car until now, found london transport good enough.
whats my best option for cheap car insurance?
Thanks in advance

Cheap it wont be, At least its not your age. Its because you dont have any no claims bonus.
I found the Ford KA the cheapest thing to insure. But seemingly identical cars and specs would give different premiums.
One of the last few real rot boxes though i think. Some cars still rust but not to the extent i have seen some of these.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You have zero years no claims bonus and so your premium will be massive no matter what you do. To get the cost down you can do two things: move somewhere where your car is less likely to be nicked and buy as cheap and underpowered a car as you can find.
At least you aren't 17 I suppose!0 -

Have a search on here for threads where it mentions "young drivers and cheap car insurance". They will give you a clue to the car models you should look for to buy and how to decrease your premium.
One thing you will find is due to your time in the US you may get higher insurance quotes then someone who was born here or has lived here for 20+ years, as a lot of them ask about period of UK residency and where you were born.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I was in exact same position as you, had a US license and recently at 32 got my UK. Car insurance is just gonna be scary. Its really never worth owning a car at the start. Sadly though have to you pay over the odds for a few years and build up your no claims and experience to get to the stage where it can be affordable.
A few tips that I found out when looking for insurance.
Use many comparison websites and keep reference numbers on best quotes as others will try to beat that quote.
If you have a garage to park your car then use it, if you however only have a driveway say you park on the street. Its cheaper by hundreds to park on the street than on your own drive.
add a named driver to your policy. have yourself as the main driver policy holder but having a named experienced driver will shed you hundreds.
fully comp usually cheaper that 3rd party
if you dont intend to claim use a high as possible excess.
I am with admiral and when i went to the comparison sites I got 4 different quotes from Admiral ranging from £3000 to £1000 quite a difference from apparently same company.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
