Boiler Replacement - British Gas Itemised Quotation

A couple of weeks ago my boiler broke down, as it usually does at this time of year. No worries, we have a service contract with British Gas who turned out the next day and replaced a PCB. I was at work though, and my wife was given the usual tale of doom & gloom by the repair man before agreeing for one of their 'heating consultants" to visit us and give a quotation for a new boiler. Our current one is a 16 year old Potterton, and we have a traditional system with a hot water storage tank and feeder tank in the loft.

Yesterday I received their quotation by email, which I've copied and pasted below. As expected, it's extortionate. They've been quite cute by not bumping up the price of the boiler too much, but they have squeezed in so many extras and charges that it's laughable. I would have thought that with a costing of £1,149.36 for installation of the boiler, it may just have included "Connect Boiler Electrics and Test" but no, that's an extra £190 please.

i dont know what a british gas enginer has that a gas safe registred fiter hasnt..
i wouldnt think of reputation as , for what i have read here and there, bg doesnt seem to fit the criteria of a ''john lewis'' style o costumer care
poterton, as good as it may be , it doesnt match the leading brands, vailant , w bosch ..

59 pound for a delivery of a 3500 pound costum?
i changed mine, top of the range vailant, top quality filter and new flute, supply and it 1380.00
i understand your case may need couple of hours to disconect and bypass the loft cistern etc , though being in the building trade i know well it doesnt even last that much as the whole system stays the same except the terminating water going to the tanks and diverting them to the closed circuit
you can get rid yourself of the old tank etc or let it sleep there for winter
if you dont know someone that can recomend, find 3-4 locally and get a written quote from them, for a completed work and dont pay them cash .
3500 in south london...i could add another 1000 and have a brand new system with coper pipes, new boiler etc and maybe aswell new radiators for a 3 bed house

Tell them you will do this yourself. Save £49 and gain around £120 at the scrappy

great boiler and free 5 year cover. you could get one of these fully fitted from about £1200.
work it out
bg boiler cover for 5 years say £250 a year = £1250

local plumber. £1200 for boiler and then £50 a year for a service £200 = £1400
so if you are on boiler cover you could have a new boiler for around £150.

good plastic pipe is better than copper now. new copper is very thin. i only fit copper on show and always fit speedfit under floors.
del is free. bg are charging customers for something they get free.
BG are no better than any other company and to be honest in my opinion they are not as good as most.
