Central heating. Better to switch off at night or not?

Hi,

I'm wondering if it's financially better to switch off the heating during the night & have the timer put it on automatically in the morning >or< have it on 24/7 (while people are in the house) so the house stays warn all the time?

We are living in a 3 bedroom semi-detached house.
Last bill we received for gas was £330 per quarter.
Loft is not insulated if that makes a big difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

It would be financially better to insulate the loft. It's cheap. Can be free or very very cheap to do and payback time is less than a year.

You would have to be at deaths door for the heating to be on at night in this house.

(I thought that was what you had blankets on the bed for)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Just wondering if it's better to leave the heating on low during the night so the whole house doesn't have to heat up again in the morning...

How low is low? In a well insulated house if the thermostat is set to 21 and switches off at 10pm it will have the same effect as turning the thermostat down to 12 when you go up to bed as the house won't fall to 12 overnight anyway. If it's freezing outside it may start up again at 6am in the morning but the timer will probably be set to come on then anyway.

    For convenience or cost?

As has been said many times, if leaving CH on all night is an option, why not leave the kettle simmering all night so it doesn't need to warm up in the morning? It really is the same principle.

I was looking for cost. Which would be cheaper.

    Ok. Thanks for the input.

Looks as though it's cheaper to completely switch off the heating at night & back on during the day. That's how I'll do t then.

    Cheers.

Last winter I left the heating on at 14 degrees overnight in the coldest weather, I didn't want burst pipes. If it's not frezing outside I don't leave the heating on at night.

    Its really simple..

All you have to remember is....

    Heating on>meter turns
    Heating off>meter doesnt turn
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
