Getting out from Rome...

Going to Rome next month for a few days and was thinking about possibly going out of Rome for a day trip. Some people have suggested Florence to me, while others have suggested Tivoli.
I'd be interested in hearing peoples recommendations of nice places to visit and what's to see and do there, ideally somewhere that's about an hour, hour and a half away by train or bus.
Chizz!

Hi, we went to Tivoli from Rome. There is a Villa there with some amazing fountains. It was very nice to get away from the city as the air is quite dirty. I would recommend it. We also went to Pompeii for the day but that's a bigger trip, two hours away by train but worth it for me as i had always wanted to go there. The Rough Guide to Rome has a section on day trips from the city.we have love enough to light the streets.0

Florence is a long way out from Rome! (a good 2 hours or so by train) There are oodles of gorgeous places to explore a bit nearer by
there are some useful tips here. 0 -
You can do Florence in a day trip, but to be honest you will spend so little time there it's probably not worth it. If you want to see Florence you really need a couple of days or more.
I would suggest a trip to Ostia Antica. it's an ancient ruined city that was buried and preserved by the silt and only unearthed recently by archeologists. It's a massive place, you will need at least 4 hours or more to see everything, and they have still only unearthed a tiny portion of the city. It can be reached by metro from Rome, journey takes about an hour.0 -
Thanks all, I'm thinking Tivoli then. The Italy Heaven website is very useful, it does say that Villa Adriana is actually outside of Tivoli and a bus ride away, anyone know how easy it is to get to? And how far? I'm hoping it will all be open in March???2p off is still 2p off!0
