I would agree with Caz, they all look OK except for 2006-7 where your tax should have been only 1,112 (instead of 1,793) based on your figures

You tax code usually changes every year as your personal allowance goes up.

As others have stated you appear to have overpaid tax in 2006/07 as a result of being on a month 1 tax code which assumes you would have earned your monthly salary for every month of that year not just the 2 months you worked.

As a registetered nurse you may also be able to claim tax allowances for washing your uniform, shoes and tights and any subscriptions you may have paid to the NMC, Unison or the RCN amongst others none of which have appear to have been coded into your tax code.

You'll need to claim the tax relating to the 2006/07 and 2007/08 tax years back before the end of March as HMR&C is reducing the number of tax years you can go back from 6 to 4. This will effectively take 3 take years out of the picture for reclaiming tax by 5 April.

the same happened with my wife started work in december and was taxed as though she was employed all year. she recieved a rebate of just over a 1000. that was also for 2006/7. they should be contacting you soon if there is an error.
  • @ Clapton - yes the two paychecks started from october.

I will try to get a refund for 06-07 and 07-08.

Many thanks for your help, I will post the outcome.

Never heard of clothes allowance or different codes for nurses, is that something hmrc should be implementing or the nhs trust?

07-08 looks accurate, the only overpayment seems to be 06-07

you need to apply for it. you can claim for washing the uniform if you do. shoes and tights/socks. nmc fees. union fees. and learned publications or in other words magazines that relate to your job. it won't make you a lot better off but its better in your pocket than the goverments.
