Tax refund help/analysis - registered nurse

in Cutting tax
Hi, I am trying to assess whether I may be due for a tax refund. I have looked at a lot of posts on the site and also looked at the tax calculator guide (very helpful).
I have been through my paychecks and P60s from 2006- 2011
The difficulty I’m having is that I have been given more than one tax code throughout each year (sometimes three). This makes it difficult to use the tax calculator as you can only input one code....
Does having more than one code mean that its likely I will get a refund?
Am I able to post my total earnings and codes on this forum for analysis by a more savvy person?
Thanks, awesome site

Hi,
No - more than one code isn't likely to leave you overpaid provided PAYE was operated correctly. It's only the final Code for the (tax) year that's relevant - the one that should appear on your P60.
Try this calculator as it's fine for full year checks :
http://www.listentotaxman.com/
- just get the right year from the drop down and do put the tax code in.
But post your full details back (Pay / tax / Code / Year) off the P60s if you're still unsure after that?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

You need to give the tax paid before anyone can answer whether you have overpaid/underpaid.
By the way 2011 tax year doesn't finish until April 5th 2012 so you can't have details for that yet.0 -

where are these figures being taken from ..P60?
give gross pay and tax and taxcode from each P600 -
While Mike, Jem and Clapton are right that more figures are needed to confirm whether the tax you've paid is correct, I think the question you should be asking is whether the tax codes are correct. What is the reason for you having so many different codes, are you working on short term contracts for several different employers each year? I think you will need to search out the coding notification for each one so that we known why the code was issued on those occasions when it wasn't the standard code for that year.0

Apologies, does this look alittle better? The final tax codes listed below are all from my P60's
I have been in full time employment as a mental health nurse from 2006 - 2011. I changed trust in 2010. I did get a promotion in 2009 which may account for the code changes

For any years where you didn't have the standard code, did you have any expenses you incurred, or did you receive any benefits at all?0
-
Thanks for the update, I'm sure one of the others will confirm if the tax paid figures are correct. Getting a promotion wouldn't require a tax code change, you would simply pay more tax, assuming your pay increased at that point. Changing trust might cause a new figure to be issued, if the change involved getting a P45 from the first trust and submitting it to the new one, although really it shouldn't have been necessary. The number of codes you've had seems excessive, most people who stay in the same job will only have one per year, which would normally be a straightforward L suffix. You really need to establish why your code shanges so much, even if it's right at the end of the year you could have been paying too much tax earlier in the year and nobody wants to lend their own money to HMRC at 0% interest.0
