NEC Group Booking Fees

I phoned the NEC box office earlier in the week to purchase some tickets for my parents' Christmas present.
I mentioned that I lived close to Birmingham and the operator informed me that if I were to purchase the tickets in person I would save the £10 booking fee.
So after work this afternoon I rushed to the box office. When asked how I was paying I replied 'debit card'; only to be told that the fee applies to all card purchases regardless.
Of course, there are no signs to warn people and there are no cash machines in the vicinity.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it worth complaining?
