Yes they may mention it but they don't really want to rile the landlord and cause problems getting the deposit back although if they do find probs they can tell the university about it. He could also make excuses to reduce the return deposit for wear n tear etc even though the house is as they aquired it apart from the damage the burglars did.

He can't make reductions for fair wear and tear, the rent covers that.

When I was at uni, we rented for one year from a private landlord, who was a nightmare, and then for one year through the university accomodation bureau. The latter was excellent; they sorted out our nutty neighbour ("Mr Mad") who kept padlocking shut our back gate so we couldn't get in. I would vote for option 1. ie decide now that the three of them are definitely moving, and invest some time looking, preferably through the university.
Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...

when we were renting in our 2nd year at uni, everyone tended to look for a house in Dec/Jan and have the contract signed by end of Jan to move into the property in September and it was kind of accepted by everyone living off-campus that there would be first year's coming around to look at student houses.

So when we were living in our student house we had people around to look at the place in Dec/Jan as we had done in the previous year and we had to let our landlord know by early Jan (after moving into the property in September) if we wanted to renew the contract for the next academic year, as otherwise he needed to advertise to find tenants...this was the same for everyone else too...

About giving him notice: Athough they can't really say for sure until they have found somewhere else of course when they find somewhere they will tell him straight away but what if it takes them a while? It looks like hes going to be putting the pressure on. Really shouldnt he need a months notice at the latest? Then say if they cant find anywhere and have to stay could he choose not to renew thier contract and make them leave anyway?

When I was at uni and lived in rented accommodation everyone started their house search around Easter. The easiest way was to ask someone who had no problems with their landlord if their landlord had anymore properties as it was almost impossible to get a house on the university list.

Very few people stayed in the same place after a year because of things like people falling out, people graduating, people wanting to live in a different location, people wanting to live with a different number of people, problems with landlords, problems with the house falling down, houses being burgled, the rent being put up to high. The list is endless.

Even good landlords' asked if people wanted to stay in their property for next year around March, so everyone confirmed asap whether they were going to. It's just a fact of student life.

What if people ask them why they are moving out? Do you think they should say anything about the burglary?

Students don't tend to ask those questions.

But if they ask tell them as I was told by a friend who got burgled at uni that when she spoke to more who had lived on the road that year and in the past years she discovered that the road was targeted every year for burglaries. They were burgled by a group of young teenagers.

The landlord will give 24 hours notice for people to view simply because students are known not to be tidy and they would like their house clean when it is viewed so it can be seen properly. It hard to view a property if you can't see the floor or there are dirty plates all over the kitchen.

Also all tenancies signed in the last few years must be fair , so even if it is not in the tenancy agreement the landlord has to give "reasonable" notice before they or their agents enter the property.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I'm not sure the landlord is such a s***, he is only asking a question after all, if they want to stay on he will be very happy I guess. Having had a burglary I would be surprised if they do. Getting a door hung can take anywher between 1 day to two weeks depending on how many times the carpenter lets you down!
As for gluing a door, sorry but it is not uncommon a repair, not great, but the lock will probably fail before the glued bit will....
Get a fixed time for viewings, 2 or 3 times a week, so as not to disrupt your life too much

Well I do think it was not good that he expected my daughter to sleep in a room without a door for 3 days especially after being burgled its really unerving and she hasnt been able to sleep even with a different door on its upset her so much. Plus having to leave it like that for anyone to walk in anytime wasnt very nice at all she still had belongings in there

The front door was completely kicked down so it was a lot of glue he only had an ordinary lock on the door anyway no deadbolts. They asked him afterwards if he could put some on and he said no. I also didnt like the fact that it is so dark at the front and back doors they cannot see the lock to put the key in when its dark and have to feel for it. I just don't feel its nice to have to be in that position student nurses coming back to that, they could get pounced on but he refused to put any lights in

Thing is if he is going to be going on the university accomodation bureau now himself he may have to put all these things right. If they stay I doubt he will till next year.

Burglaries are high in student accom and it is a risk even if they move just hope they can find somewhere suitable for thier last year
    Thanx
