How do I change 1 lock to another different one?

Hi,

I've been renting a property now for the last 7 months and I've noticed certain things amiss when I've come home from work and suspected the landlord has let himself in when I'm not there on several occasions! I've never had any proof of this so couldn't really say anything! But now one of my neighbours has told me theyve now witnessed my landlord going in when I've been at work!

I'm a single woman and feel very uneasy now. So how can I go about changing the lock? It's an old lock such as this one hxxp://w w w.savoydoors.co.uk/images/uploads/chubb_mortice_lock_sk74e.jpg but I want to buy a Avocet ABS cylinder lock but don't think I'll be able to get it to fit.

Any thought please?

P.s) Sorry for the link I can't post live links yet.

You won't be able to fit a different type of lock without the landlord's permission as it will damage the door.

Simplest thing would be to get another Chubb of the right size/type and swap them over, retaining the old one to refit when you move out. They are normally only held in with two, maybe three, screws on the edge of the door. Undo the screws, slide the old lock out, slide the new one in and replace the screws.

Depends on type of lock. Change the barrel/cylinder INSIDE the lock, not the whole lock. Keep the old barrel and put it back when your tenancy ends.

£5-10? and 10 minutes with a screwdrive. See here. Google utube for other lock types.

If there are two locks on the door (eg a yale plus a proper 5 lever mortice) then take one barrel out, lock the other one, go to locksmith/B&Q and buy identical barrel.

If only one lock you'll need to leave a friend to protect the house while you do this!
  • Open door.

On the face of the lock you'll see two screws. Undo those screws.

Remove door handles. Remove spindle between handles. Lock should pull out. Measure it, or take to lock shop / B&Q etc and buy one the same size. Insert new lock into slot in door, fit screws, fit handles. You may need to fiddle the keep plate on the door frame that the bolt shoots into.

Example. You need a 5-lever BS (British Standard) sashlock.

Wilkies is the best (cheapest) place i've found for 5lever locks.

edited: sorry just relaised you specified chubb mortice. Take the old one and get a matching size to BS standard. Locksmith will advise. See here
