I'm with AXA and I had to claim this year for my bridge baby, they took ages to pay out but they did pay, apart from the wait I've got no problems with them.

Hi I was looking at AXA but as my dog is 9yrs old they quoted me around £19.21 for the £7000 a year job but every condition comes out of that £7000 then it re-news every year and the Excess is £75 but they didn't put a percentage on for her age like the others so when I phoned them they said as it was AXA Direct and they didn't have an actual website like the others and would probably put an excess on the next time but I was wondering what you think of this quote ~ we have been dumped by Halifax and therefore do not know where to go for the best because of her age and pre-existing condition.
    Thanks for any advice

Sorry I don't really know much about insurance but I used to be insured with M&S, when they put the premiums up a load I just went with AXA as I knew they were the underwriters for M&S at the time. My girl was 13 when she died and they never charges the extra % that others do, the only thing I wasn't to happy about was that they will charge the excess every year for an on going illness, I was charged the excess when she was first diagnosed with kidney failure and after her renewal this year I was charged the £75 again. Sorry I can't be of more help :o.

You definitely need a proper life policy with a pug because they have so many hereditary conditions.

As claims go up virtually ALL companies are adding a %excess from 8 yrs on. Some companies do a 10% excess from 2 years old. The insurance world is changing alot!

I am currently with Tesco, for my 14-yr-old Lab. She has been very healthy her whole life and I have hardly ever claimed. However, I have hit the problem someone else mentioned - insured through companies that then discontinued doing pet insurance, which as my dog got older, made it harder to start with a new company (I wish there was such a thing as a "no claims" history for dogs).

Then we moved country and at 10 years old, Tesco insured my dog for £19/month. Now, 4 years later, her premiums are £60/month - with only one minor claim in the 4 years she has been insured!

Tesco were also a pain because you had to call for a claim form, they then mail it, you fill it in and have to send/take it to the vet, etc. What a palaver!

Apparently, Tesco recently switched underwriters and the claim process is a lot simpler. You also can go online to make a claim, so maybe my past experience is no longer valid.

I had my old boy insured with Tesco since he was 7 months old & he's now 13. When he reached 12 his premiums increased to approx. £37.00 per month. We'd only made a couple of claims in all those years so I decided to cancel his insurance. A year down the line and he was diagnosed with cancer & his treatment has cost well over £1,200 so far. Don't know the exact figure because he's more important than the money. Thankfully, we're in a position to pay his vet bills but wouldn't be very difficult if we couldn't. Our vet always advised against insurance and just said to save a regular amount every month into a seperate account. Really difficult to decide what is the best course of action.
