Charge for 'free' driveaway insurance?
As the title, been looking at changing my car the last few days and have come across a few dealerships who charge an 'administration' fee for taking out Avivas FREE 7 day driveaway insurance! Its not a big fee, normally less than £5.00, but surely the whole point of the insurance is its free?
Also, are dealerships allowed to charge you for applying for finance? Had credit problems in the past which Ive sorted now and my credit scoring has improved but I dont know if I will get finance on a car. One dealer wanted £30 upfront before they will even process a finance application, is this right?

They can charge what they please as long as they tell you about it.
£30 is a drop in the ocean compared to what letting agencies charge for credit checks.0 -

Years ago when we got our first car Norwich were doing the 7 day driveaway insurance free if you bought a car from ebay.
I rang them up and they didn't even ask for the auction number but if i remember correctly, they did insist on giving me a quote to get the insurance.
Might be worth ringing them directly.0 -
I wasn't charged when I took the free 7 day insurance earlier in the year0

If dealerships want to charge you any fees ask them to remove them or take your business elsewhere. It would just annoy me too much.
Having said that.......
We have just finished building a house and when we started I really thought I would concentrate on price when buying things. By the end I was more interested in looking the sellers/tradesmen in the eye and deciding whether I wanted to do buiness with them.0 -
The only real "cost" to us dealers who offer the 7 day free insurance via Avivivivivivia is two sheets of A4 paper. So I'm not sure why they want to charge a fiver.
While we're soprting the paperwork out for the car, I pass the phone to the customer and by the time the paperwork is done the insurance stuff has been emailed thru to me.0 -
If you use hpicheck.com to hpi your new car you will automaticly get the 7 days free driveaway from aviva, but the hpi check will cost you £20 , i did it through the pistonheads website a few months back, £20 for 7 days insurance is a bargain and they covered Mrs Kaya on it as well0

When I purchased my new car a few months ago I was offered the 7 day Aviva leaflet, no mention of a charge but I would have to apply for it and get the cert sent to the showroom for tax purposes.
Having dealt with the Indian call centre in the past  I declined, it's too much hassle. The salesman agreed with me!
I just got my existing insurers to issue a new cert for the anticipated hand over date.0 -
A decent dealer will make it easy. When I bought my last car I used the free audi drive away insurance."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
