New to all this

Hi,

I'm looking for some advise on gas / electric providers. I'm moving into a new home, and I'm trying to find a suitable energy provider/s.

All the compare websites seem to require your current provider and previous bill amounts in order to 'beat' your current deal. I have no previous bills to refer to because as a student I lived in a house with 5 lads, so I don't believe those figures would be representative of future usage.

The new house is a 4 bed' semi-detached town house, it has a gas boiler. There will be three adults living there, my wife, her sister and me. I estimate our usage will be comparable with a typical small family, since my wife will be at home during the day due to illness.

Any ideas as to where I start with finding a provider or providers would be greatly appreciated.

You will have a current supplier, that is because when you move in and use any electric and gas you have a contract with the existing supplier.
So one of the first thing to do when you move in is to take both meter readings and ring the existing supplier with your details and the meter readings. You will then be their customer.

You will then be free to switch if you want to, but if you intend to do that then make sure you do not agree to a tariff with exit penalties when you ring up.

As you have no idea of your usage then go on a comparison site and enter your curent supplier and the national average figures which are 16500 kwh gas and 3200 kwh electric. That will show who is likely to be your cheapest supplier but will not tell you your annual cost as you do not know how much you will use.

If you decide to switch it will take about 6 weeks so you will eventually receive a bill from the current supplier for about 6 weeks of energy.
    Hope this helps.
