Free iPhone 4s? Hmmmm...

Hi everyone!

I hope this is the right place to put this.

I've recently been blessed with a Samsung Galaxy (android) mobile. Over the last twenty-four hours, I've twice had a notification pop up on the the status bar on the top - a white star with a red circle in the middle. It says something about winning a free iPhone. Clicking on it leads you to...

I know it is a scam; what I wanted to know is how they're delivering these alerts to my phone and what exactly would happen if I was to put my phone number in?
Thanks!

Usually with these scams you get bombarded with spam texts which come with expensive charges to receive them. If they get your email then you get bombarded with spam emails.

Probably worth letting Orange know about the scam as the site url makes it look a bit like an official Orange site.
    executive.office@orange.co.uk

The scammers also most likely own:

    benefit500.com
    buffettads.com
    chaozempire.com
    com-2011.org
    coregius.com
    coregius.mobi
    dream-marriage.com-2011.org
imperial-corp.com (Which has this contact number in Germany: A Patrick Reinhardt Company
    E-Mail: contact@imperial-corp.com Phone: +4917660027086)
    orange.com-2011.org
    simplewritingjobs.com
    att.com-2011.org
    consumer2news.com-2011.org
    !!!!!!-2011.org
    giveaways.com-2011.org
    news6.com-2011.org
    promotion.com-2011.org
    twitter.com-2011.org

So a fake twitter site and several fake news sites.

The scam is linked to a company called Zingtones
    (Play'n’ Win by Zingtones) http://zingtones.tv/

Don't know how you are getting the alerts though.

I had a similar link today via e-mail, I checked it out and if you put your phone number in you are subscribing to a service that costs £3 per text! AVOID and dont put your number in! The page its-self dtates at the bottom that the information on it are not to be taken literally and cannot be classed as factual!

Do you still have the email? Orange are asking for the email address it came from as their legal department is looking into this phishing/scam site.

  • I actually had a small window appear on my screen yesterday congratulating me on winning an Apple iphone4 and to click the link to claim. Win a 'phone, of course I have. Click on the link hmmmm, I don't think so. I can't remember which website I was on unfortunately when this happened, I doubt it was random. It's not appeared since - beware!

If you are getting alerts like this in the notification bar then they are coming from an app you have downloaded. Try installing 'air push detector' found on the market, very simple app tells you which apps have hidden advertising like this.
