What way do i go? confused

What should i do?

Here goes, i was made redundant a few years back but before this time i created a website in my spare time for fun, after the redundancy and whilst looking for work i decided to put some adverts on the website.

this proved effective and generated a nice stream of income so i signed off jsa and registered self employed, i have been living off this income for a couple of years but recently the amount it generates has fallen below what i need to live on, so what can i do?

If i claim jsa/hb/ctb how do declare this income which could be £0 1 month and £1k the next? and the question "have you done any work in the past 2 weeks?" would be "no" as i haven’t?

It would be impossible to estimate income for wtc/ctc erm between £0 - £12k and i work 0 hours a week? and i wouldn’t want the pay back problems either.

Just claiming hb/ctb would be a nightmare as self employed is.

Any ideas what would be best, thanks

  • Presumably as you say you registered as self employed you will have paid tax and NI contributions and have an accountant. If not then you will have a lot of explaining to do, just to the revenue alone.
If you have been upfront, then claiming wtc/ctc is easy whilst self employed. And as self employed tax returns are always in arrears date wise income can be averaged. And projected income can be estimated.
Why can't you sign on for work, and mean it, and continue to be self employed. You would not get unemployement benefit because self employed contributions if you paid them don't allow for it.
As you say you were'nt working then you would have to declare unearned income from the original website design.

Sorry, yes im registered self employed and pay my weekly ni and complete and pay my self assessment.

But if i estimate say £8k and get a years wtc and later find im not entitled to it? and how do claim if i dont work any hours?

i cant see how i would benefit from this? if i wouldnt get anything why bother?

    sorry dont understand.

Whats your problem ? Estomate your income and when it goes over ring them up and tell them. you wont end up with an over payment if you dont spend it once you know you have earned your 8k !!

how many hours do you work ?

Well just go for a figure of 8k a year. Then all you need to do is add up the money you earn, when you get to 8k call them and let them know your new estimate.

What is the nature of your buisiness that you can earn £850 with 0 hours. You will of course have hours to upoload adverts, speak with clients, do your accounts ??? If you are self employed then you just need to say that you work for 16 hours, they can be "seeking" clients etc.

The full details are in the first post.

Its not a business im not seeking more clients adding adverts etc.

Will speak to wtc people tomorrow, last time i spoke to them i was told i need to work to get wtc.

I think allround it would be better if i just deleted the adverts from the website at least then i can get help with rent and ct untill i find work, the income of £1 doesnt stretch far enough these days, thanks

no the details are not in the first post !!!

I dont understand how the adverts generate money at this moment in time.

I understand that "it is not a business" but you are registered self emplyed, so you must consider yourself in employment.

I am trying to help you but you are being obtuse so i shall just sign off THANKS.

My apologies i appreciate your help.

I am self employed as i have an income, i created a hobbie website years ago and placed a couple of adverts commission based on the page.

Occassionally i get paid as someone has visited the advertisers shop and purchased something, i make no changes to the website and it just sits there but a couple of hundred of people visit it.

It was just made for fun in my spare time before i was made redundent.

Sorry but i find it hard to work out what to claim, i AM looking for work but in the mean time am struggling with the bills.

    My choices:

JSA - How do i declare the income when i have done no work?

    WTC - Not working?

Just HB/CTB - Need to provide proof of earnings for the past year, have done that and they say im not entitled to any help, but that was last year! i didnt ask for help then im asking now. They asked how many hours i work, told them "none" they said claim JSA then.

Thanks for your help zoezoe sorry i worded my replies badly.

My husband has done the same thing, again just as a hobby.

Have you thought of using your time to add/create more adverts (affiliated links??) so more people have the chance to click on them and declare that time as the amount you are working? The ones you have already seem to be doing ok... some months anyway. Time to expand!

    Just a thought.
