Quick question about curtain widths/window width

We have a front door with a little window next to it and I have been looking for a nice door curtain to go across it to keep the hall warmer.

However, the only 'door curtains' we could find seemed big old stiff plain boring ones. Custom made was coming out silly money of about 200 quid and we cant make them.

So I thought if I buy a pair of curtains in the sale, then we could just use one of them over the area or get ones that are not so bunched up.

The width of the pole will be 170cm. Initially we were going to get curtains that had a width of 163cm as the curtain wont be pulled all the way across on one side. Also we didnt want anything too bunchy as where the window is, I want the curtain to be tied up as minimally as possible during the day so that I dont miss too much light from the window and the cutain will be tied in a corner.

However, just gone to the shops and the ones I like were in the sale and they didnt have a 163 width for our drop so we bought 113cm width.

Before we open them, if we dont pull the tape on the top of them to bunch them in, do you think if we put both up (with only one side going ride to the end of the pole - the other side will be free sliding) it will cover the area properly? Each curtain should be 113cm so that should equal 226cm??

I hope this all makes sense, difficult to explain without a diagram.

If its a pair it won't fit as both curtains will add up to 113cm width but if its two single curtains at 113cm then yes it will be wide enough.
Just reread your post and it seems its a pair of curtains at 113cm which won't be wide enough.

ah, well this is what confuses me, because on the packet, it says 'each curtain approx 113cm x 228cm (width by drop)

so i am assuming that each curtain is 113cm wide??

but if this is the case, then the other day we bought some curtains from the same store with teh same rules applied for a window that is 170 wide and the size we bought was 163 x 228, which i dont understand as ob viouslyu each curtain is 163 wide, so why did i need 300odd cm for a window 170 wide??

    i dont get curtains

To allow for doubling up for bunching!

right, got you, so if i dont buch them up (ie we dont pull the tape or very much) then we'll be ok? because we have only really bought them for warmth and there isnt much room to have bunched curtains all billowy and stuff so it might not matter? do you think?
  • I know, it gets so confusing! I used to make curtains and also used to work for an interior design company. Usually on a pack of ready made curtains (a pair), the measure quoted on the pack, say, 120 x 220 cm, is the width X the drop of ONE curtain. Roughly, the minimum I'd allow for gathering is twice the width of the pole/track. So, if your pole is round about 120cm, wide give or take 10cm or so, that would be about right. The fuller you'd like your curtains to be (i.e., more gathering) the wider the first measure needs to be. 250% fullness was the calculation for a more generous curtaining. I've made door curtains very cheaply from a double fleece throw from Ikea or similar, with curtain tape sewn on top, very cosy.

ok, thanks, the pole is 170 though,,,, have i made a misateke?
  • No, just that the curtains won't be very 'full', i.e. not gathered up so much.
