If I was going to strangle a taxi driver I'd put my arm round their neck in a chokehold, not pull on their belt, but maybe that's just me. :)

Taxis are used a lot more than your average joe, hence, more likely for a bulb to blow, and we all know they can blow at any time.

In comparison to how many private cars drive with blown lights v taxis, when considering time on the road, I don't think this is an issue whatsoever.

All the more reason they should be checking the car over at the start of each shift. Which most don't.

Private hire vehicles (at least in Scotland) are MOTed like any other private car - every 12 months after 3 years old.

Every 6 months in Cardiff and a lot of other major cities.

Ok, then please back up your statement that 'most don't.'

Please provide official figures from local councils that prove what you are saying.

Or is it just a flippant comment?

I know some taxi drivers who carry a small spray bottle full of acid, to get around carrying a weapon for their safety.

It is easily concealed, easily reached and just appears to be a small bottle of clear liquid if their cabs are ever checked over.

Just a note for those who may think of strangling a taxi driver.

Most of the taxis that operate in my town that I see on the daily basis.

Why would there be official govt figures??

I didn't say there was official govt figures.

I suggested there was local council figures, which there are via freedom of information, it is a local authority that licence taxis/PHV.

In my authority, the single most reason for issuing a prohibition notice was incorrect display of signs one needs to trade.

    Hardly a mechanical safety issue.

And now you reveal superhuman powers because you now state, essentially, that 'most drivers don't check over their vehicles' simply because 'it is what you see in your town.'

Amazing! You can just look at a car and know if the tyres are pumped up correctly!
