Citroen C5 owners discussion-good or bad!

I have a Citroen C5 2.0 SX Auto (03) model, which i purchased from my dad when around 2 and a half years old with 14,000 miles on the clock. It now has 83,000 on the clock and has gone straight through every M.O.T and i have only had the rear calipers sorted, this is a design fault apparently, and the timing belt replaced. It is still running like a dream nearly 6 years on.

MAte of mine has one of these as a company car and he loves it to bits. I went somewhere with him in it once and it was certainly an impressive beast but the only thing I really didn't like was the size of the bonnet. I drive a big car but that was just a pee take considering it has a smaller engine than mine.

Great car though, especially liked the detachable torch in the boot that also acts as a boot light..

Big, cheap and anonymous. A good deal if you get a reliable one.
  • The suspension is excellent, really smooth ride and you can also jack it up to drive through deep water, which i have used occasionally.

  • the diesel ones can be troublesome. If your buying take tools and a torch to take the lid off the diesel filter, remove the paper element and shine the torch around looking for tiny metal particles, the hp pump starts to break up internally then the swarf gets circulated around the rest of the fuel system wreaking havoc. the bits are easy enough to change, just pricy to buy.

Haven't had a C5 but have had a Xantia XUD Diesel (140k+) and a Picasso 2.0HDi (70k+), both from new. Both practical cars.

They both ran well, engine and running gear wise, but they did have more "odd" failures than other cars I have had.

Like many cars there are those thta praise the brand and idiosyncracies and otheres that find fault.

    We have a 2001 2.0 diesel HDI 110bhp C5 estate - 2Adults 2 boys (11 and 7)

I bought it about 3.5 years ago for £4K with 90K on the clock, and I had the timing belt thing done before I got it...

few niggles when we got it:
rear driver side passenger electric window blew the fuses, until the electrician diagnosed the fault in the wiring loom!
none of the cigarette lighter sockets work now - don't actually think they worked in the first place!
it 'dances' when you park up and lock it - so much so, that any new security guards that come on duty at my work will call me to tell me that my car's dancing (the self levelling suspension can't level itself and so goes up and down), still it's quite naueasting if you've parked up to wait for someone... 'Nosmo' says it's because the leveller in the front isn't working, trouble is I can't get it to do it when it goes to the garage...grrr
the top up radiator fluid reservior reminder comes on when it's really cold (<-5°C)
It now has (checks recent MOT) 150K on the clock and just had the clutch done (I cooked it in Wales shortly after we bought it, so it's done well to last this long)
other than the few niggles it's a good workhorse and has taken a lot of abuse. I take it to the garage for service & MOT it every year.
I love the sound quailty of the radio but hate the trafficmaster thing.
I like the display in the centre console thing - but the knob on the stalk doesn't work so I can't see how fuel efficient my driving is. I also like that it tells me just HOW cold it is before we set off...
I manage to get (checks spradsheet) around 40 to the gallon but i bet i could make it do more if I really tried.
When it dies I think we'll look at a VW Caravelle or similar...

  • Has anyone on here actually managed to fit a headlight bulb to a C5?
It is virtually impossible, you have to be a contortionist, have 2" wide wrists and x-ray vision to complete this task!

Or take it too the dealer as the manual no doubt advises.

They need the work you know.
