someone hit my car

Tonight, a lady crashed into the back of my car. Quite alot of damage. I took her details and her mine. She has admitted it was her fault. I have contacted my insurance and tried to ring hers (AA) but they weren't over helpful.

What happens next? How long does it normally take for the insurance company to pay out (ie get my car fixed).

I am so upset. I have just started a shift pattern job. Relying heavly on the car for the night shifts!!! It really isn't my day!

Depends on your insurance company. Do they provide a courtesy car?

It is drivable, but not sure what the police would make of it! really don't want to get pulled over. Am very worried. She is insured with the AA. How can I find out??? Also do you know how i find out what the police class as acceptable damage to your car without getting a ticket.

do you have full breakdown cover with aa or rac? when i had an accident they could have provided me with a courtesy car under their cover.

i had paid extra on my insurance to guarantee a courtesy car as i live in the middle of nowhere.

ring your insurance co. in the morning and find out what you are entitled to.

After an accident it is advisible to have your car checked for roadworthyness at a garage before you drive it anywhere. All sorts of things could have happened under the skin that could potentially make your car dangerous to yourself and others.

When someone hit me in the side (obviously their fault) he gave me all his details etc, I knew my car wasnt driveable as it was hit in the wheel, door and wing. As soon as I got home rang his insurance company (norwich union) and demanded a courtesy car as I needed to get to work in the morning. As far as I was concerned its their fault and Its their insurance not mine. Anyway I got a car next day, had it for a month or so before they decided to send someone out to declare my car written off and got a nice cheque plus kept my car, which I sold too! So I would suggest you call AA and get a car sorted. I know some companys say that you claim on your insurance company and they claim it back from other parties insurance company. Not sure if this is the way it has to be done and whether you can argue it out or not, someone else on here may know the legalitys???? HTH

Was she actually insured by the AA or another company through the AA. I set up my insurance with the AA last year and the policy came through on their letterhead but when I had an accident in October it transpired that my insurance was actually with Co-operative insurance arranged through the AA.

I have my house insurance with the AA and it is with someone else, the AA act as a broker but they should still sort out any problems or claims that happen, as they act as the middle man, you wouldn't actually speak to the actual company that insures you as such. ;)
  • Hi..its my understanding that you can claim 2 ways

    1. You can ask your insurance company to make the claim on your behalf. This means you claim on your own insurance and they claim it back but this can mean you loose your no claims discount if she denys it was her fault. I am assuming you are fully comprehensive.

    2. You claim direct from her insurance company and just notify your insurance what you are doing. This way you contact her insurance company direct and fill in the paper work.

If you need a car immediately, it may be best to claim via your own insurance but air on the side of caution...she may change her mind later on as to who's fault it is

    Hope this helps

In relation to the police I'm afraid unless someone does a hit and run or aren't insured then the police will tell you it's a civil matter and not a criminal one.
In relation to how long it takes it'll depend whether her insurance company dispute any part of the claim but it could take anything from 2 weeks up to 5 or 6.

thank you all so much for the great advice. I have contacted my insurance. I also wrote down details stating she was at fault and she did sign it. (i know it doesn't count for much). I am 3rd party/fire/theft. Here goes with it all. Never rains but it pours.

    Thanks again.
