Previous employer has had hr data stolen or lost..

Options
So i received a letter informing me of this loss and that i am likely to have had my data on it included addresses/ni number and bank details were on it. Isnt this the sort of things large financial organisations get fined for ? Can the victims get compensation?

So your not worried about the security risk or any adverse affect it may have -- just seen it as a money grabbing opportunity?

I mean if i start getting accounts applied for or opened in my name which could be time consuming to sort out re: compensation as ive seen happen to a family member before.

The worry now of having to wait and see what happens with this info..

I dont know full extent of what they held or what was lost i hope to find out. Im unsure what crown documents are though but they should have passport or driving license as was copy was taken when i applied/got the job.

Tried call today to find out whats going on but was closed fingers crossed will get to speak with someone about it.

Illegal copies? Since when has it been illegal to retain copies?
I was of the understanding that as long as there is a specific purpose for having the copy (in line with data protection principles) and that they take appropriate measures to keep it securely then it is perfectly legal.

I thought the only protection that specifically may apply to UK passports would be standard copyright over the design & royal arms etc. Happy to recognise if someone can direct otherwise though.

In response to the OP though, I would probably ask what advice the company is giving out about the risks? What advice has the company received? If any fradulent activity is detected that may be down to the loss of personal details, would they be willing to pay for CIFAS protective registration or seek further advice on it?

Cheers ill note that, not sure what cifas protection is ill look it up before i call them. They did give a code to get 12 months free on protectmyid? Through experian to monitor it which is a bonus i suppose for some peace of mind but doesnt change whats happened and what could result of it.
