Office Furniture

The company I work for is moving into a new office and I have the job of buying new furniture.

I've checked out a few online companies who did free next day delivery, but I just wondered if anyone on here knew of any companies that they could recommend or any companies who sell second hand reclaimed office furniture??

  • All the second hand office furniture places I know of are independents, I don't think there's a big chain of them, just google around.

I've found them good for things like desks and filing cabinets but it's not worth it for chairs and smaller items. Also be careful that the one you go and pick is the actual one delivered to you - stick a sticker on it with your signature or something, otherwise you can find yourself agreeing to buy a nice condition one and end up with something mankier turning up.

Can save quite a bit though if you are careful and make sure you are buying proper office solid stuff not cheapo chipboard.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

+1 for not chipboard stuff - it is designed to be assembled in situ and left, it weakens hugely with disassembly, damp, movement, moon phase etc.

My uncle used to be in this business.
New furniture during boom times, office clearances and 2nd user stuff during recessions.
It's a pretty cut throat business with low margins for most smaller traders.
You need to google or use yellow pages locally, then actually visit them to choose your items as there is good stuff and bad stuff. All depends what your budget is, for how many users, and whether you need any floor planning done for you.
If you have old furniture, some even do part exchange.

Independents are fantastic but hard to find so ask around. It took me ages to find one and it is only 5 mins away from me! Everything I got is bombproof and was half the original price or under with lots of small items thrown in and free delivery.

New chairs are cheaper from Viking than second hand ones from the independents...one of the quirks of the business!

Make sure you know the catalogue price so you can haggle, and if you can pay in cash all to the good ;) It's crazy that banks etc have so many refits when they rebrand and replace so much top notch furniture but good for the rest of us.
  • there's a wood / recycling place in Brighton, near the Old Steine.. bottom of Carlton Hill I think?
