ID requirements aren't about "trust" its about complying with regulations and guidelines set by the FSA, and whether you need to produce ID or not is basically down to a computer.0

Interestingly, I also was requested to go to branch when opening current account with Halifax - actually was rejected (when I was BOS customer for years and have excellent credit history - credit card with HSBC, Barclays, BOS). When coming to branch, was offered account immediately without the need to provide any documents. I asked the customer representative if there is any risk with me that i was rejected and he just laughed and assured me this is regularly prblem with applying online - lots of good customers having mortgage with them also were rejected. hmmm..0
