Time is tight...if you're nearby and have close friends to hand, why not invite everyone over for a party in her honour at your place on Christams night? Memories are better than possessions.
Either that or a gift experience, such as a trip in a hot air balloon, day at a spa etc (something for which you can print out a voucher).Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I asked for a charm bracelet for my 40th and each freind gave me a charm that'd remind me of them

I don't know if your friend is having a party or anything for her 40th but one of my friends bought me a beautiful photo album for my 40th and I put all my photos from my birthday party in it - its a proper old fashioned album in box and is one of my favourite things I got for my 40th.
Other than that I also was given a beautiful pendant necklace by one friend and a gorgeous mirror for my living room from another.
I think a present she can keep is the best idea for a 40th. If money is tight how about framing a photo of the two of you together in a nice frame?
We bought a hot air balloon trip for one of my friends which was something she had always wanted to do.
Hope you find something soon!0 -
What's your budget?
I second the idea above of a photo of the two of you (preferably an old one!) in a lovely frame. Or a special piece of jewellery.
Now I know you said you wanted something for her to keep, but depending on your budget, what about a voucher for a spa day for the two of you (check out buyagift.co.uk - there are loads of bargains on there and a 20% off code floating around somewhere). For my best friend's 40th, we went to Ragdale Hall, and I bought her a photo as above. There are lots of experience days at the moment - cookery, cupcake decorating, driving, spa ... you name it!
You are a bit late now, but if you look at notonthehighstreet.com there are some beautiful gifts many of which you can have personalised. I particularly like this: http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/morethanwords/product/personalised-dad-loves-typographic-art but it's on a 3-4 week delivery.0 -
Thank you all for your suggestions. I appreciate your replies! I would say roughly about £50 on her birthday and as it is the same day as Christmas day - we usually spend about £20 on each other for that! I do like the idea of a piece of jewellry eg charm on so she can add to it!
I've got a pic of us when we were 4 in the egg and spoon race (really cute), but what do i do with that - just get it framed or put it on somethin? :j0 -
How about a Pandora bracelet? the modern equivalent of a charm bracelet, you can then add charms for future birthdays! Other friends might like to buy charms if they too are struggling for present ideas.0

my bf was 40 earlier in the yr, funds are tight so mine was a budget gift but she loved it adn thats all that mattered!!
I got a teddy holding heart, and in his arms was a bottle of her fav tipple, and the other held a mini can of coke for the mixer. Slipped into the box next to him was a a gift voucher for her fav jewellers. So she could choose what she wanted.0 -
You could get the photo copied onto a cake in one of the supermarkets.0

YES - do that! choose a really nice frame, if she likes antiques then a nice antique frame and have the pic resized to fit - or a really smart modern frame!
tbh, if in doubt about a gift I give photo frames!0 -
40 presents in a basket, hamper, flower pot......All individually wrapped.
