Because if you're at home and your sick/injured cat manages to drag himself home then you will be immediately on hand to seek veterinary treatment. If you were away for several days then the poor cat wouldn't receive that help until you returned, by which time it may well be too late!

Oh dear, I'd better give up my job then. There's quite often nobody in the house for 7 hours or so most days.

On the other hand I could just get a sense of proportion

But, by that reasoning I could just go on holiday for a week as long as I leave a bath full of water and a ton of food for my dogs.

After all, something could go wrong when I'm at the shops for an hour so why worry?
  • i am surprised at the amount o folk who think it ok to leave a cat for more than 24hours without being checked on.
i understand they are more independant than eg dogs, but i would never have left my cats for that long without someone going in to replace water and renew / top up dried food and attempting to find them to check on their wellbeing. mine only used a littertray as kittens before they were neutered so couldnt go out.
i no longer have cats , just dogs and birds. dogs go tokennels and the birds come away with me. in all honestly in my opinion even little hamsters etc that cannnot be injured by cars, dogs etc should not be left longer than 24hrs.

Ours go to a cattery when we're away, luckily we found a nice one, some we saw I wouldn't dream of leaving them. I'd consider leaving them home for a weekend with plenty of food and water provided they couldn't get out as I'd worry about them getting run over.

Both sets of parents have offered in the past to feed them when we're away but I worry the cats might make a bid for freedom when they opened the door and they might not be able to get them back in again.

One of mine doesn't like the cattery and wouldn't be best pleased even to be shut in at home but, while she may not be happy at least she's safe.

A week? Why not a month if you want to introduce strawmen?

Like I said above, we have someone feed our cats twice a day when we're away. If they got injured, and managed to drag themselves back, they'd be discovered within 12 hours. As opposed to 7 hours on a normal working day.

So actually, you believe that cats shouldn't be left alone longer than 12 hours. That's reasonable.
