Don't know if anyone can help, but as they say better to travel in hope etc........
We have a 94/95 1.5 corsa diesel standard engine.
When we start it for the first time during the day it struggles a bit to start and then *hunts* for a bit until you pull away. We wait for the glow plug indicator to go out and for the relay to *click* before turning over and only have this problem for the first start of the day. There is also a small amount of blue smoke although this has reduced since adding a fuel cleaner.
This problem has started since the installation of nw glo-plugs, not sure if that is significant?
Don't want to be conned by a garage so if anyone has any ideas please help

I've never had a Corsa (so this could be something particular to the type), and don't know about later stuff, but there are a few basics with diesels. Air leaks - the mix of fuel to air in the engine is vital for combustion, and if you have a small air leak in the system the air can collect when the engine is off, sometimes in the injection pump. As you crank it over, the air is bled from the system but interferes with the mix until it's clear. Injection pump - again air related, there may be a small seal wearing inside the pump letting diesel out and air in. On a money saving note, a poor air/fuel ratio will spoil your MPG and therfore waste money!
Depending how much you want to spend, it's worth getting a recommendation from somebody local for a small garage or independant mechanic.
Hope this helps, good luck!"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"0 -
We've had this problem on our peugeot 406 for about 2 years.
When it started misbehaving we tried new glow plugs, but no real difference,so we just give it a couple of pre heats before starting, and after a bit of blue smoke and hunting, away it goes.
It's covered about 100,000 miles in the 4 years we've had it,over 200,000 on the clock now. Will probably sell in may,(starts ok in warm weather!)foreverskint wrote:Don't know if anyone can help, but as they say better to travel in hope etc........

I would agree with the post that suggests it's an air leak problem. You should check all the joints in the fuel line and see if that sorts it out.0

I forgot to mention, blue smoke on starting is usually a sign of valve guide seals wearing. When the engine is off, engine oil seaps past the seals and into the bores. When you start it up, the oil is burned and as the engine warms the seals expand and do thier job, sealing the oil out of the bores.
This is the same for petrol and diesel engines, though diesels cope with it better, as the engine oil is nearer to diesel fuel than petrol, which needs a spark to ignite it.
In a very long time this will be a problem, but it takes a long time to get the seals to critical condition."Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"0
